Forums - Microsoft - Halo: MCC review thread! UPDATE: Reviews incoming - 87 metascore so far

Well Orange Box is clearly the excpetion at 96  (except on PS3 where it was a mess)

What comes next?

I know God of War only got a 73 but that wasn't in the same league in terms of upgrades and value.

I cant recall any other "collection" scores from memory.

The Orange Box was a collection released in 2007 of games released after 2005 with a brand new experience called Portal.

MCC is a collection released in 2014 of games released after 2001.

You see the difference.

Every collection of old games suffer the same point... dated gameplay... the expections are the collections of non-old games like The Orange Box.

I can't imagine it having a meta below 90, so I think it'll keep going up.

Reviews nowadays are surprising, to say the least.

Reviewers do seem to be more willing to use a wider range of scores this generation, so I am expecting to see a lower number of 90+, and esp 95+, games...or is it that the early gen offerings have been a bit shit, and we'll return to normal hyperbolic scoring once the good stuff finally starts to show up?

I really don't get how a huge collection of 4 games all with a fresh coat of paint and new features, of which the lowest scoring game was an 87, only gets an 87. Especially with TLOU:R getting a 95 despite barely being any different than the original that released a year before it. I swear some of these reviewers are just way too biased against MS right now. This is the third great X1 game in a row that has been too harshly reviewed. You'd think critics would be grateful that X1 is actually delivering some great exclusives while PS4 has nothing to offer there.

Well maybe TLoU is just superior (it is) to even a collection of average shooters.Halo does not have great characters, gameplay, story or concept like TLoU.They are all enter changeable with nothing new or exciting being added outside of bigger maps.Really.Also it's your untrue opinion about exclusives when Sony's exclusives have sold better. You have two Forza games and Sunset. What other exclusives are there? Oh the other games that are on PC?

TLOU is one of the most overrated games of all time. People confuse the amazing characters for being an amazing game. But I'm sorry, that's not what makes an amazing game, but rather an amazing movie or book. Games should be first and foremost about the gameplay, and TLOU does nothing special there. In fact the gameplay is rather uninspired survival/shooting gameplay more than anything else. And the concept is not even close to "unique." The apacalypse angle has been done to death, even the little girl/older guy pair up in the classic novel The Road. The first 3 Halo games are far more fun to play, especially from a multiplayer standpoint. And Halo's characters and story are probably some of the best ever in a shooter, even thogh they're certainly not TLOU level.

By the way, Bioshock Infinite is the game that should have gotten all the attention TLOU did. They were released the same year, except Bioshock had the whole package. The characters, story, and the gameplay. And Infinite's story was better than TLOU's on top of all that.

People whining over an 87. Frigging sad. Great score. Review standards change over the years, as does gaming, relax, people put way too much weight into numbered scores.

I will try to explain what is holding the MCC collection and it is the same if you do a MGS collection today (ohhh it happened)... and why TLOUR received a better score.

First forget content... a 1 hour game will be reviewed in fair way and can have a better score than a 100 hours games... content is not what is reviewed but the experience delivered.

TLOUR is a game with great story and a gameplay that holds to today standards... you can see that if you play the Multiplayer where the gameplay shines with ones of the best in the last generation... it is year old game so it didn't felt old yet... the opposite the gameplay is flesh.

MCC with expected of one game (Halo 4) already have a dated gameplay holding it... you can't play the first and second Halo today thinking they will hold in terms of gameplay with the new ones... this is more evident when you have games like Titanfall and Destiny that elevates this aspect to a new level.

That is why most reviews are in 80-90 side than 90-100 side (what holds a meta score 90+).

Said that the game is receiving great critics... really a must to have game for Xbone's owners.

You are obsolutely right about the outdatedness of Halo before Halo 4.This is why Halo (like COD) is overrated.Neither will age well as they are just fad/twitch shooters that are only good for MP,but become obsolete when the next one releases.TLoU is one of the greatest games ever created like U2,GOW2,MGS3,Ocarina of Time and FF7.No Halo game is on that level.Splinter Cell and NG were better than Halo 1.Halo is the fast food of gaming lol.

Halo 1 - 97
Halo 2 - 95
Halo 3 - 94
Halo 4 - 87
Halo 1-4, all upgraded, all the multiplayer maps all graphically updated andrunning at better framerates and resolutions on a much better server platform than they originally did - 87.

How does this make sense, at all? How can you take three games all over 94, a forth that got 87, strap them all together with updates, upgrades and better performance, and ship them as one complete package for the price of a single game, and still only get 87?

I don't even like xbox, and I actually don't particularly like the Halo series either, but this is bullshit.

Ps4 had nothing to offer?  Trolling really?  Tlou is a masterpiece and is still fairly new,  please.  Stop the console war nonsense.

The best part of TLOU is the gameplay... it is ahead characters and story but people just remember the story while the critic use good part of the reviews to say how the gameplay shines in the overall package.

TLOU gameplay is to notch to today standards... hell there is no gameplay better in the last generation... if you played the MP (where is focused only in gameplay without be offusced by story) you will know that.

Welp either way it's better than the entire Halo franchise and so is Bioshock Infinite which was not as good as the first one and TLoU deservo it's hype.
