Forums - Sales - PlayStation 4 is the Fastest Selling Console in Australia (44% of All Consoles Sales Since Launch)

Of course in the world too but we will focus in Australia today...

---

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia announced today that PlayStation 4 is the fastest selling console of all time in Australia, according to NPD Group Australia sales figures ending October 26.

Citing NPD console hardware sales data from November 25, Sony also revealed that PS4 currently holds the number one new-gen console position in the region. The console broke pre-order records for Sony consoles and devices in Australia prior to its launch in the country on November 29. Pre-orders were backlogged until the following year as retailers struggled to meet demand.

“The console hardware category in Australia has more than doubled in value since release of eighth generation hardware in 2013,” Luis Gil of The NPD Group Australia said in a prepared statement. “PlayStation 4 accounted for a substantial 44 percent of the total category value since its launch.”

The PS4 launched in Australia one week after its competitor, the Xbox One. The Australian Xbox One launch was the most successful console debut in the country’s history and saw 65,917 consoles sold in the first three days of launch, doubling the previous record of 32,900 held by the Nintendo Wii.

Approximately 700,000 PS4s were sold across Europe and Australasia in the two days following launch and the console was the fastest-selling in UK history. Sony announced in its last earnings report that it shipped 3.3 million PS4 consoles worldwide during the second quarter this year, bringing the PS4 total lifetime sales to 13.5 million units since its debut in the U.S. on November 15.

The PlayStation will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in the Australian market in early 2015. In the meantime, Sony is rolling out PlayStation TV for PS4 users in Australia on November 14, along with a dedicated PLUS7 app “later this year.” The program will allow users to stream PLUS7 programs such as “Dancing with the Stars,” “Home & Away,” “The Blacklist “ and ”Beauty and the Geek.”

I'm curious why people are buying it so quickly...how is it different from ps3? More power? If so seems like a odd reason to buy

A lot of games.

It have at least five times games than PS3 at the same period... btw it is the bigger and most diversity library of any console ever.

The PS3 didn't sell particularly quickly at first in Australia though.

The PS4's offerings on shelves are quite meagre at the moment here in Sydney. I guess it has a few strong downloadable titles though.

Still, the brand is strong, and some decent multiplats have started to drop.

Nintendo and Xbox brands never really sell well in Australia. Sony has always sold the most here. You can easily tell by the shelf spaces allocated to each brand at any store.

It has something to do with the PlayStation brand itself.  And the legacy of the PS2 - the mother of all console success stories.  But in relation to the PS3, its selling faster because its cheaper than the PS3 was.  The PS3s launch price was downright prohibitive.

PS3 launched at liek $999 here and maybe slighty more for the top model (can't remember).

PS4 launched at $649. To us it was liek a cheap piece of gear lol.

Then there was also sales for about a month wher ethe PS4 was $399. I got one at this price was fantastic deal.

Pretty sure it was AU$550 at launch, not AU$649
