In Smash, you can go against anyone you want, and realistically you wouldn't be hitting the same person in a 3-4 player smash throughout the entire game.

Very easy to do in 2v2, and is the best tactic, each take on one other fighter.

I don't know if it applies to 2 v 2 or not.  But at the same time, I think that doing that also would prove rather difficult especially when the items are on.  The stages aren't awfully big.
