Story in Bayonetta is nothing more than a tool to string enemies and battle together. In that regards, it's a success. You don't go into the new Rambo movie for a rich narrative, you go to see Rambo murder an entire army by himself.

So why would you go into Bayonetta looking for anything other than the most fluid combat ever implemented in video game history?

Im talking about the nonsensical story. Of course I am a hack n slash player and Bayonetta (of course its one of my favorite hack n slashes ever)was a challenging one but it is known for the fact that you have to put the story to the side. God of War balanced the action with the presentation into one cohesive unit, which is why it became the package the it became. Bayonetta is underrated and lacks because of it but it has its own beauty and charm. This is why I cannot wait to play Bayonetta 2. Its the spiritual successor to DMC and does it in a way that would make even DMC blush. Neither games had great stories nor did they rely on them, but rather the stylish look and style of the characters. It was the attitude that made them stand out in their respective eras. Kratos....Kratos is just a beast.

I actually enjoyed the story in the Bayonetta games because it was nonsensical.

Its outrageously over-the-top moments and characters were highly entertaining to me, and I loved its sense of humour and how playful and sassy it was. I liked it the same way I like movies like Fight Club or The Big Lebowski.

I never said I didnt appreciate those moments (because I did), but Platinum is known for over the top games. Even if they tried to make a serious storyline it probably wouldn't work out so well. They couldn't even string together MGR story on level with the typical MGS.

I'm not asking for pulitzer prize winning work here, just for the writing to not be so jarringly terrible that it takes me out of the moment because I'm too busy shaking my head.

Well I knew your stance obviously, my objection in this matter is that while movies like inglorious basterds and the big lebowski may be silly at times (and in ways inherently) their storylines are still cogent at their base and had some sort of an impact.  Bayonetta (and really, platinum games in general) is all flash and no substance.

I'd respectfully disagree; in Bayonetta 2 there was genuine heart beneath all the flashy silliness; the scene where Bayonetta's father asks her just once to call him "Daddy", and that he wants her to be the one to kill him should be succumb to evil actually quite impacted me, particularly as, due to him being sent back in time, she had already done so in the first game but without realizing at the time, though he of course would have remembered. It tied the games together very effectively too and allowed Bayonetta to broaden her range and display emotional vulnerability without weakening her strong persona.

I can't speak to the second, perhaps the writing improved but the story in the first was so appalling that it offended me on a basic level.

Been a while since I've played the first, but I remember finding its story enjoyable if only for the wonderfully absurd characters and scenes.

That's why I'm glad Platinum stuck with what they do well, enjoyable ridiculouslessness, instead of trying to craft a dark and straight-faced narrative. They succeeded at being fun instead of failing at being serious.

Dude, you just don't get it. Bayonetta has to be darker and more broody, if it's not serious it's not real gaming brah.

God of War by far. I played and beat every DMC game and the only games I really liked were 3 and DMC. The rest were meh to awful. I still don't get why 1 gets so much praise considering how bad it is. Gameplay/story/camera were all bad in the first DMC. 2 needs no explanation and 4 had half of the game backtracking through the same areas and killing the same damn bosses.

The story and bayonetta  herself in the second is more palatable. Bayonetta is no longer a floozy amnesiac strutting her stuff around. She is a fierce friend who would go to hell and back to savejeanne, and i especially like the kind and protective big sister persona displayed ( i can go into detail but I won't spoil the story for you). Unlike the first game, there are very few times where bayonetta's action crosses the line of immature. I've finished the game 3 times already, and i can only recall two instances where the game gets too silly. The first time is in my sig.

I was just talking about in Bayonetta 1 & 2.

I haven't played MGR, but while the tepid story in Vanquish was a drawback, the amazing gameplay more than made up for it in my book.
