Forums - Sony - It begins: First exploit on PS4!

Don't get too excited; I hate to spoil the fun but this will probably be swiftly patched and it'll be back to square one, sadly.

If it's not fixed before the holidays, and it probably won't because all those consoled are already built, Sony will have an even better holiday sale^^

Also it doesn't necessarily going to help to fix this hole. As described in this article, the purpose of this exploit is to get more information about the system. Information that could lead to future hacks no matter if this one hole is fixed. For the PS3 all it took was information about the generation of specific keys that could then be replicated tosign external code for the machine to run.

I hope this eventually leads to pirated games! ARGHH!

I predict sales will explode in Argentina when it happens.

Yeah, the same will happen here in Colombia... (sad for the game developres)

OT: it took the more time that i originally expected since the PS4 architecture is now similar to a PC.

As expected so fast because; x86. PS3 took 4(?) years.
PS3 > PS4.

I don't really think any company should go through extraordinary measures to prevent piracy, because it ends up impacting their core audience negatively. I think Sony learned that lesson last gen, myself. Especially with the negative press it whipped up.

Don't get me wrong, they should also attempt to patch out any weaknesses, but it appears that they made less of an effort on security this gen, than last gen. Pirates are going to pirate anyway, hackers are going to hack, for some it's with malicious intent, for many it's simply the challenge it presents. It still didn't appear to have much of an effect on last gen's software sales.

Wrong. The CPU architecture itself doesn't stop anyone nowadays. It's the system architecture, the layer above, is the vulnerable part of current day systems.

Homebrew = unofficial software made by nerds in their free time.

And theoretically, it means just that (keeping in mind the hardware needs to be able to handle the emulated system. I assume the PS4 would be able to emulate everything up until the Gamecube, plus the Wii, minus the original Xbox). But you obviously need to wait for someone to develop the emulators for it. Given the PS4's popularity, I'd imagine it would be a matter of time for those to appear, once it's properly hacked (if ever).

The Vita seems to have a somewhat strong cult following... I'm not sure.

Wouldn't it be easier to hack and play everything on/for PC? Wouldn't a PC be able to play PS4 games as well?

That's obviously the best solution. PC can already emulate GC/Wii/PS2 perfectly with just a few minor issues. Though there are people that just don't like gaming on PC (even with a controller) for some reason, and would rather have one console to rule them all.

And no, a PC can't play PS4 games, and won't be able to do it for at least 10 more years, and that's being extremely optmistic. PS360 just took the first steps, a full 8-9 years after their releases. Hell, the original Xbox doesn't have a working emulator yet, and emulating Saturn/N64 is still tricky to this day (Rogue Squadron is unplayable on a regular emulator, for example. You need a pretty powerful PC to run it).

The same would happen in Brazil. Damn, Latin America is truly fucked up.

Damn, what makes those consoles so damn hard to hack/emulate?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Well... Sounds easy, I mean, modern PCs should be able to play 15 year-old games without a problem, but then you consider that the games were made with another hardware in mind. So you have to make the PC and game "think" it's actually a completely different hardware. And that requires extensive knowledge of how the original hardware even works - which is the reason why there isn't any Xbox emulator, there's barely any documentation about it, despite it having a x86 architecture (which, no, doesn't make it easier to emulate, that's a common misconception. It makes it harder if anything).

And the Saturn, for example, was notoriously difficult to program for, so imagine emulating that. And the N64 also had some weird crap behind the hood and some devs took advantage of unorthodox methods to run their games, making everything much harder... it's technical and complicated, and honestly, I too don't get it that well.

damn, sounds complicated... Well, you understand it well enough to explain it to me in a fashion so that I get it - at a very basic level ;) that's always something I guess =)
