Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft is sitting on a precious Rare that still hasn't been used.

Microsoft is sitting on a huge pile of Rare ip's. Well, not huge really. But Banjo, Conker, Battletoads and Perfect Dark is a considerable amount. But they're stuck in this limbo where no new game will ever be released from these franchises. And they screwed up the ones that did (Banjo and Perfect Dark... Killer Instict? I'm not sure.)

And even if they did, didn't a lot of key people left Rare? Would the games even be good?

Why list this if you have no idea how the fans are reacting to it? Hint: People love it.

Also, you have no idea what is in limbo and won't be released now that Phil Spencer is getting Xbox back to core gaming. I mean come on, even freaking Phantom Dust is getting rebooted.

They initially thought they got donkey-kong in the deal, thats the reason why they bought them at the first place. It's no wonder that they didn't "do" anything with them after they realized they didn't get that IP.

I'm not letting Microsoft ruin another game from Rare. They would probably make it like that Ninja Turtles from last year.

Well Microsoft might suck at developing games but maybe they could hire a team that is good at action adventure/beat em up to resurfance the title. I mean they got two third party developers to work on Killer Instinct. Microsoft has proven first party doesn't really need to be worried about as long as you own the IP.

I don't understand this comment. Since when does Microsoft suck at developing games?

Even Rare themselves have developed good games in the last 5 years, even if they are not games the market particularly wants. They may not be fantastic or like in the Nintendo years, but in Viva Pinata, Nuts and Bolts, Perfect Dark Z and Kameo they have made a wide set of very solid titles.

It simply isn't true to say that either Microsoft, or even Rare particularly, sucks at developing games. All those games I just mentioned have scored as well or better than the most recent entries from Sony's first party (though not Nintendo's). Does Sony have better games than its recent ones? Sure. But so does Microsoft.

LOL Thats dumb of them. They must not know their gaming history. The most famous Donkey Kong ever was made by Rare but the IP was created by Nintendo.

MS has never been spoken about by the gaming media as a top game developer outside of Forza, Fable and for buying Halo. Their first party has never truly ever been praised by anyone.

The best Rare game since Microsoft owned them imho has been killer instinct and I think they made the right move opting for two outside devs to develop the title. MS will end up getting higher rated titles by getting outside devs to develop for them in my opinion this gen. Gets more games made in a shorter amount of time.

I never said that Rare sucked. I've said in the past that Rare is not what they used to be nor does MS run them properly, but I agree that MS is on a goldmine of IP's and should start shelling out IP's to the top developers with proper budgets. Hell. After Killer Instinct...I truly believe thats the best route since it has worked so well for this gen.

I keep forgetting that game exists. Yeah sure add that too. Doesn't make much of a difference to me.

At that time though, microsoft didn't have a real gaming precence. They needed some good IP's and 'Rare made DKC' and seemed like a good deal at the time atleast.
Then the deal went through and "huh, DK is still a nintendo IP?... shit" i mean, rare still have/had some great IP's but nothing that was known to the general public except donkey kong.

Yeah but thats similarly why they bought Bungie away from Apple before the game was finished because MS knew Halo would be great and they had no heavy hitter for the Xbox.

But yeah...so much politics...that was just dumb on Microsoft's part. Funny enough the initial people who were pushing the Xbox were actually in into wanting to be involved in the gaming industry for all the right reasons, but Bill Gates went into the console industry for all the wrong reasons. Its amazing how such a pure idea gets perverted.
