Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft is sitting on a precious Rare that still hasn't been used.

Microsoft made it clear that Conker is pretty much a niche character not good enough for a full game outside of a cameo appearance. For its day Battletoads was in my opinion tougher than Ninja Turtles and the characters were more badass, kind of like Street Sharks was opposed to Ninja Turtles.  Of course I was really....really young...but yeah. Banjo is a good idea as well but Rares IP treasure box is filled with great games and I don't think people remember how big of a mark Battletoads made on the beat em up genre in the 90's. Even if they made a low budget beat em up that would still be sick.

How much did the original Battle Toads sell if its not niche in comparison?

I think if it was a highly advertised side scrolling XBLA exclusive, it would more than make its money back and then some. A lot of gamers who play Killer Instinct (Generally the ones between 24-30+) and the fighters are older gamers who would relish the moment of a Killer Instinct/ Battletoads 80's/90's reunion in any way shape or form. It would also introduce newer gamers to an older face. They could also show the devs who made the last Ninja turtles how to make the game properly (not Microsoft). MS seems to be good at picking out third party to make the games for them than developing themselves.

It could work out, could be like Shadow Complex or Castle Crashers on the 360 (only 2D side scrollers from last gen XBLA I can remember that was highly advertised), but I don't see it happening.

How can you say Rare didn't put a whole lot of effort into their Kinect games?

You'll know by taking a look at their recent games they've made ...

Looks to me like they put a lot of effort into Kinect Sports Rivals, from what I remember the game looks really good and I remember it having little details like being able to scan ur face to ur main character, its just hard making a good game for a peripheral that has poor integration with gaming.

Exactly! MS is going to really need to differentiate XBLA from PSN this gen because Sony is really on a roll right now with the indy devs. Much like Nintendo is using exclusives to differentiate themselves, MS needs to invest in exclusives for XBLA as well. SInce they seem to be afraid of internally creatig new IP's this could be a real opportunity. Look at Scott Pilgrim! That game sold great for a low budget title!  Shadow Complex was awesome and led the way for other indy metroidvania style side scrollers to be made.

Phil Spencer on Rare.

- Hasn't seen the new Rare game yet, they will show him in November, he likes letting studios work on ideas for a while before managment people come in and start getting involved

- Rare is really important to MS and he gave them a push last time he saw them to spread out (sounds like new things)

- Games, gamers want to see - Halo Wars 2, Alan Wake 2, Mech Assault, Conker 3, Blinx, Fusion Frenzy, Banjo, Kameo 2, High Heat Baseball, Otogi, KOTOR and Shenmue 3, Phil says some of them games on that list they are doing some work on! Invested on doing franchises they own though and talks about KOTOR (Star Wars) being owned by Disney.

I crossed out the games he ruled out.

Also, if Naughty Dog was to make a game it would feature Move controls. That is much easier to develop for than the Kinect. Look how well Kinect adapted to the Move and Eyetoy. Very accurate.

Yes to bold, no to the rest.  Why no Mech Assault :(?

Rare even at Nintendo under tge stamper brothers didn't always get it right. Jet force Gemini, blast corps for example didn't review as highly as banjo, conker and perfect dark.

Although the astmpers brothers left recently Microsoft has put some more good developers at rare. Let's see what they can do without Kinect games. Kameo was a good game. In fact better than when the stamper brothers were making it for GameCube.

Viva pinata was recieved well.

Rare just need to make sure banjo 3 and conker are better n64 versions and the world will go nuts.

Over in the thread of old franchises you want to see again, on this site even Sony and Nintendo fans are saying conker and banjo. In fact those 2 games are cleaning up with most points right now.

- Not doing anything with Mech Assault right now, would be cool to take advantage of the Ip are some point, could be rebooted and do really well and across more than one genre but it's just an idea, nothing officially being worked on.

Phil and the Xbox team are reading the Xbox Feedback site and they know what people are asking for. Rare games are coming, if more people vote for Mech Assault it'll come too.

A few E3s ago there was a mech assault shown for 360. Whatever happened to that?

Microsoft is sitting on a huge pile of Rare ip's. Well, not huge really. But Banjo, Conker, Battletoads and Perfect Dark is a considerable amount. But they're stuck in this limbo where no new game will ever be released from these franchises. And they screwed up the ones that did (Banjo and Perfect Dark... Killer Instict? I'm not sure.)

And even if they did, didn't a lot of key people left Rare? Would the games even be good?
