Image goes a really long way. Not one single game clip was shown...

That link isn't embedding for whatever reason. I for one do agree that public perception plays a major role & the way Sony & MS closed out the seventh gen only fuels consumer trust in Sony to deliver great games over the course of its life! Top that off with a horrible start to the XOne with PR, DRM, 180's, etc & the brand power of Playstation really starts to shine out to the average person.

Sunset Overdrive Dudebro? It wouldn't look out of place on the wii U (apart from quality of graphics)

Quantum break Dudebro? That wouldn't look out of place on PS4.

Here's the link :) It's from back when Sony were (particularly in Europe) the first to really push a brand with a game console and market it to an older audience.

Oh I see thanks for the link & context!

I've been saying for years that software diversity is an important part of Sony's philosophy with home consoles.  NOT painting yourself into a corner in terms of niche appeal is the secret to long-term success.  Once you develop an image that leans too much in any one direction you're going to have an awfully hard time escaping it.

It's simply too widespread to not be intentional on their part.  Not just World Wide Studios, either, but also the kinds of games they support, like Journey or Rime.  They try to tap into every genre out there.  This presents the Playstation brand as a platform with something for everyone, which is not the same as Nintendo's everything is accessible to everyone message.

Microsoft went heavy into Dude Bro with the 360, and made a killing doing so, but that also established the image that their audience is mainly made up of that type of player--and considering pre-orders for the new CoD, that might be truer than ever with the XO.  The funny thing is, I give them a lot of credit, as they are clearly trying WAY harder with the XO than with the 360 in terms of first-party diversity.  I think they're attempting to emulate World Wide Studios somewhat but it's going to be hard to convince people.  You rarely get a second chance to make a first impression.

With Nintendo, it all falls on their own heads.  With the success of the PS1, it was clear that people were expanding what they liked and that the wide variety of third-party titles was becoming more and more important.  They could easily have diversified their line-up.  They had the money to build or acquire new studios, to jump on all these new genres that were finding fans all over the globe.  Instead, they just said, "we're Nintendo, people will buy what we make and like it."  They're trying now, kind of, but as with Microsoft, it's going to be a real up-hill battle.

I agree with this guy's points. Even before the X1 reveal, MS kinda hurt their image later in the 360's lifecycle. While Kinect was a commercial success, it really hurt the diversity of the 360's library down the line. Meanwhile, the PS3 was getting unique exclusives like Disgaea D2, The Last of Us, Tales of Xillia, Ni No Kuni, Rain, Puppeteer, and Beyond: Two Souls. That didn't sit very well with the 360 gamers and when MS revealed the X1, it was the final straw for a bunch of them.

What does this have to do with image? Sony has it's fair share of problems.

Sony does, but Playstation doesn't.

The Wii brand's been tainted from its inception and Xbox had the red rings and always online fiascos.

Exactly this!

I havde always believed that sony doesn't have an end all killer app or mascot that. Yes they have drake, but that was just as easily replaced with Joel, they had cole and that was replaced with deslyn. sackboy has got his own crew now... and GT is whatever car is adorned on the cover of the game.

Sony has always had something for everyone. Funny thing is, everyone (maybe except nintendo) has something to everyone. It just seems to be only associated with the playstation brand.
