Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

One can always hope. $77 billion surely didn't help Zune, $2.5 billion for Minecraft will hardly raise Windows Phone from the deep pits of last place, and that's why I hope they don't continue taking games away from people by paying companies in an effort to gain ground.
I actually really hope this Minecraft deal succeeds, that they keep focusing on mobile and tablets and servers and OS, so that they move their paws away from my hobby. It's a completely selfish hope, but their money already denied me the pleasure of playing Tomb Raider at launch, I don't want them to mess with more of my favorite franchises.
I hope they buy all the Minecrafts, Fruit Ninjas and Flappy Birds in the world, if that would mean that they'll stop ruining my console gaming enjoyment.

Its also a very self-defeating hope.

Sony's consoles are enormously better than they otherwise might have been due to the fantastic innovation's Microsoft has brought to the table. Most of that advancement would cease a day after Microsoft announced a withdrawal from the console market.

For 1.5 billion more they could of bought Star Wars I know which one sounds a better deal.

so they will make the most profits from digital on ps4

and get hardware sale boosts by pysical copys on xb1

Do you, or anyone else, think that Minecraft actually sells systems?

To me, it seems the other way around.

It's not: "OMG, Minecraft is coming out on PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, gotta buy the console!!!"

But: "Hey, I already got a PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, now that Minecraft is out, I'll get the game!"

It depends.

I've had several friends who have opted to purchase a console just for minecraft and because a ton of their friends play on the console and not on the pc.

I just don't get it people. Yes Minecraft has told a HUGE amount worldwide, and yes it's still in the top 10 charts ww but it's not going to sell enough from here on out for Microsoft to even close come to a profit on this deal which means they will be relying on expansions/sequels to the game to make profit. The issue with that is mega games like this don't easily get replaced by sequels in houses. Kids will be fine with mincraft 1 (most won't even know there is a two out of the total MC population). Parents will be fine with their kids having 1 and not worrying about 2. How much more advanced could a sequel get in terms of concepts anyway?

microsoft's primary goals probably aren't to make all of their spent money back in profits.  it's going to be a long-term thing.

5 million XBox One sales, $400-$500 retail price on each one.

$2.0 - $2.5 Billion in retail hardware sales for XBox One so far.

That is a lot of money for one game. I guess they are serious about addressing their lack of first party IPs.

There are several experts in Microsoft to evaluate this, but if it's true, it doesn't seems like a smart move...... 2.5 Billions, that could be used to expand their first party studios to try to compete with Sony and Nintendo, is being used to buy a single property, that might not be that big in the future?

That's OK. MS served its purpose, the console is plenty advanced right now. If they went away, they wouldn't be missed by many.

Time for them to help Apple innovate their iPads, instead of paying off developers to screw half the world out of a game.

Thing is Microsoft isn't buying this for Xbox, so all this talk of them doing new IP for Xbox, they wouldn't have spent the money on that ....

I like how it went up by 500 million from the rumor like it was nothing. Insane amount of money to throw around.

Great use of 2.5 billion dollars Microsoft. What are they going to do? Stop updating the current game and start making a bunch of sequels? Whore the franchise out with spinoffs that will most likely fail inevitably fail? Make it a selling point for Windows Phones? But that would involve pulling the iOS and Android versions and lose a whole bunch of revenue and relevance. This just reminds me of Zynga constantly buying up popular smartphone fads like Draw Something and then running them into the ground a year later.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
