Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

I just don't get it people. Yes Minecraft has told a HUGE amount worldwide, and yes it's still in the top 10 charts ww but it's not going to sell enough from here on out for Microsoft to even close come to a profit on this deal which means they will be relying on expansions/sequels to the game to make profit. The issue with that is mega games like this don't easily get replaced by sequels in houses. Kids will be fine with mincraft 1 (most won't even know there is a two out of the total MC population). Parents will be fine with their kids having 1 and not worrying about 2. How much more advanced could a sequel get in terms of concepts anyway?

It's a stepping stone towards MS divesting from Xbox. This is only to give Xbox a solid book value when MS sells it.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

All that money and you do this, disappointing MS. Surely a better investment could have been found to splash the cash on?

so name some?

and pls dont say "found 50AAA games and studios"

Maybe Microsoft knows something we don't about Mojang's upcoming games.

I wonder if they were ever considering buying Twitch?

At 1 billion, it seems like a bargain compared to this. And it would have gioven them so much exposure for XBox and tablets, along with throwing a wrench into Sony's broadcasts.

How Microsoft will make their money back from this terrible investment.

1. Minecraft continues to be available on all platforms.
2. Minecraft 2 available only on PC, Windows Phone, 360, and One.
3. Monthly updates for each game costing $10.
4. Skins and texture packs become DLC costing $5.
5. Online subscription for PC players costing $60 a year.

Had they bought Mojang for 500 M about 2 years ago i would have called this a good move. But now, it seems too expensive and also too late since Minecraft looks to be over its peak.

Maybe Mojang has something big in production. But i doubt that.

Only if they stick to option 1 - and stay away from the rest.  As soon as they start medling then its doomed.

I thought it was 2B. 2.5B is insane. They won't make a return on that investment until like 10 years from now.

I suppose that Microsoft will be able to take the profits from the merchandise, conventions and all the game versions but $2bil is way too much. There is so much they could have done with that money.
