I'm not impressed with PS4's sales in 2014 thus far. They had a great launch, but their numbers this year aren't that strong in North America and the Japanese market has been predictably a joke. Europe is probably going well for them. Luckily the Destiny hype should move a good number of systems for them before word of mouth spreads too far that the game doesn't live up to its billing.

I do find it some what amusing that you're apparently not allowed to have that opinion though as if there's some "Thou shall not talk ill of PS4 sales" commandment or something, lol. Gimme a break. If you think 190k for a market leader's first August is incredible, good for you. Some of us don't agree. You need to be able to process that.

Average intelligence and understanding of math, if PS4 is not impressive then neither was wii or PS2.

ow.

Is there a specific part of

Sales

In

2014

That you didn't understand or is English not your first language?

PS2 Jan to aug 2.6m

PS4 -------------2m

360 - - - - - 1.8m

yep such a unimpressive failure that PS4.

I never said it was a "failure". But please continue the persecution complex you have going on.

Hold on a minute.  You keep saying "underperforming".  I want to be sure about what you mean.  Are you using the PS2 as a universal standard?

From a business perspective, "underperforming" means that something is not doing as well as it should be doing relative to the current market.  If analysis indicates that it should be hitting 400k a month, then it would be underperforming.  It does NOT mean that a product is not measuring up relative to a product from 13 years ago.  Anyone in business knows that markets change over time and that eternal standards don't really carry any meaning beyond the trivial.

So, then, when you say "underperforming", what exactly are your criteria?

The comparative market leaders (the PS2 and Wii) since the year 2000 (14 years ago now) perhaps? I'd say it's fair to compare.

Saying "that will nevar happen again" is a bit of a cop out. Market leaders will get compared, the SNES had to be comapred to the NES, we use these comparisions as a metric of the industry, but fanboys don't understand that and think it's some stupid "my console is bettar than yourz" line of reasoning mistakanly.

I got the same blow back from Nintendo fans who kept saying "but the 3DS has sold 20+ million alreadY!" when I would point out there were some disturbing month to month patterns developing in its sales way back and it was the same "b. ... bu ... but you can't compare to the DS!" schtick then too. Now even the most ardent fanboys are starting to realize that there is a real decline going on in that market sector.

Sure, you can compare, but unless the markets in each era are identical--and we know they are not--then the comparison is superficial.  A metric is only meaningful if the conditions are the same.

Let's suppose that a runner is timed on a dedicated track.  Later, that runner is timed on the beach in loose sand.  You can compare the two results but only a fool would say that the runner underperformed during the second run because it did not match the first run.

Do you think PC manufacturers consider it a failure if they cannot reach the numbers from 13 years ago?  No, because they know the market now is radically different.  They will be trying to reach the be numbers possible now, not a decade ago.

So, yeah, compare away.  Just don't expect people to seriously think that consoles now should be selling exactly the same volume as they did in the past.  Markets are not static, especially in the technology and entertainment.  A decline in the market does not automatically indicate that the market leader is underperforming--all it automatically indicates is that the market is declining.  Those two things are not one and the same.

Lol, sorry, but now I just have to laugh at those downplaying these numbers.  It's starting to look a little desperate.  And why compare the PS4 with the Wii?  Only because it makes it look worse?  I think I know the answer to that, but let me ask you one more question.  Was the Wii the market leader in the US?  NO!  That honor goes to the 360.  So, why don't we look at the 360's sales in the US after launch compared to the PS4s:

              360                                    PS4
Nov. 2005 ~ 326k          Nov. 2013 ~ 1.14M
Dec. 2005 ~ 281k          Dec. 2013 ~ 863K
Jan. 2006 ~ 249k           Jan. 2014 ~ 271K
Feb. 2006 ~ 161k           Feb. 2014 ~ 285K
Mar. 2006 ~ 192k          Mar. 2014 ~ 371K
Apr. 2006 ~ 295k            Apr. 2014 ~ 199K
May 2006 ~ 221k           May 2014 ~ 197K
Jun. 2006 ~ 277k            Jun. 2014 ~ 269K
Jul. 2006 ~ 206k             Jul. 2014 ~ 187K
Aug. 2006 ~ 204k          Aug. 2014 ~ 190K
Sep. 2006 ~ 260k

Ok, so that's a total of ~2.7M after 11 months for the 360 vs. ~4M for the PS4 in 10 months.  I even gave the 360 an extra month, however, that is for another reason.  You see, September is Destiny month.  PS4 is going to KILL the 360's 260K.  At least by ~2x.  Which means it would beat the Wii's 1st September, which was 501K.  That would also mean it would beat the PS2's, too.  Well, technically, I couldn't find its Sept 2001 numbers, but in 2002 it sold ~500K, so I assume they were probably close to the same.  Again, cherrypicking a few months, and only pitting it against a couple of consoles, just reeks of desperation.

That looks like five fairly underwhelming months for the PS4 in a row. But I guess no one should mention that because it might ruffle a few feathers.

The 360 was not the market leader, that would be the Wii. Why don't you put the Wii's first year up next to the PS4?

You say that after ignoring that in just the first 2 months the PS4 did better than the 360 did in over  8 of its  first 11 months yet you wonder why everyone seems to be in shock at your comments?

Truth be told is that the only reason people are still being civil with you is cause no one wants to get banned. And the 360 was the market leader in north america. 47M to the wiis 45M.

PS4 is a monster... I know.

BTW 360 is the market leader in US.

This is going to be a hilarious thread to bring up after September NPD and after Jan 1st.

And all this for a $399 console and a total drought of 8g games in combination with the stink of remakes and cross-gen being commonplace for the 1st 12-18 months of XB1/PS4.

I think everyone expects a large PS4 bump in September for obvious reasons, who is really going to be surprised by that?

Well, 2014 sales totals will mark PS4 at ridiculous historical levels once those are tallied. 800k is possible, along with the biggest September NPD of all time. Hardly the 'disappointment' that some make it out to be. On the back of a $449 bundle and $399 bare SKU, that's .. pretty insane honestly.

One of those two is a monster but PS4 (outside of having much higher inventory for launch) isn't it.

like he said,

how many times are you gonna ignore the facts????? "4 months" (better?) does not negate total sales. You keep focusing on 4 months to spin your argument, ignoring all the sales data.........

either way... 1 month or 4 months the facts still remain. the PS4 got to 10M before the PS2. And the PS2 went onto become the best seling console of all time.

Lets look at it another way, if you sell 300k of your console for 12 months (january to december) and end the year having sold 3.6M consoles, and I sell 50k of my console for 9 months but somehow.... I end the year (also after 12 months) having sold 5M consoles.

Of the two of us who do you think would be regarded as more successful? How is it possible that you do not see the sense in this?

You know damn well that the comparisons aren't fair since the PS2 has had yet to launch in the majority of it's regions at that time so why don't you align the territory releases together to see how well that goes.

You're right, it's not fair.  For the PS4.  Wanna know why?  The 10M for the PS2 is manufactored units.  Not shipped to store, just manufactored.  It's just how Sony handled the numbers back then.  They changed to the standard shipped numbers when the PS3 launched.  PS4's numbers are actual SELL-THROUGH numbers.  If we did apples to apples, then the PS4 passed PS2's "10M" months ago.

lol they have the exactly same sales for the same period and one is a monster and other not lol lol lol

I know why people don't take you seriously.
