Forums - Gaming - Lack of day 1 Reviews of Destiny is a joke

Still surprised how much reviews carry for people. At this point in my life I know what I like and do not like, cannot remember last time review influenced me.

Also, there was a beta for this to try it out, right?

Around the Network

over 5 million people played the beta, there is enough people out there that dont need reviews for their decision.

Reviewer: "Game too good, must not log out... MUST NOT LOG OUT..."

the lack of day 1 reviews for certain games is part of the reason why i no longer pre order and encourage others to do so as well.

What choice do publishers have? Reviews are a threat to sales.

Publishers can pay off reviewers to get better scores (has been common practice), but eventually the review outlets themselves become worthless because nobody is going to believe them anymore. So the next best thing to do is block timely reviews entirely and let people buy the games based on hype.

Also, games with heavy online components can be reviewed before release. All that takes is the publisher setting up servers for reviewers.

From what i understand, they looked at setting up servers, but in order to fully populate all the different worlds and events they would have to have thousands of players on at the same time.  So instead of giving reviewers access to a baren online server, they just opted to make them wait for launch.

Since online is so important to this game, I can understand why they went this direction.  It wouldnt have been a representative experience of what you get post launch.

i cant buy it until Friday anyways, i think thats a benefit of it needing to login online to play. Launch games like that always usually have bumps on the road on launch day especially.

It is a little odd actually.

It's not odd at all, the servers didnt officially go live until today.

Can you imagine the outrage from gamers when a review comes in and calls is 7/10... gamers will be up in arms saying "How the hell can you review an MMO when the servers are not on until today".

With gamergate going on (lots of people complaining about the gaming press) I dont think it would be a good time to do a review of an MMO before it's actually online (i.e its impossible..lol) and still keep any resemblence of credibility.

One of the biggest complaints is that if you're in an area on a mission and someone finishes it, even someone random and not with you, it resets the mission for the planet, your progress included. I thought for sure this was one of my beta complaints that would be fixed first, seems so stupid. Apparently not though.

Huh?  Missions are instanced.  You are seperated from everybody that isnt in your group when you get to the mission area.  There is no way some random person can finish a mission for you.  Your comment makes no sense...

You are right. Bungie/activision ARE controlling the media.

Don't they usually turn servers on early for review copies of the game though?
