Some of my best gaming memories are from Gran Turismo. It's the challenge aspect of it, it really gets me hyped, because you can always, always improve. Those races where you keep finishing second or third to a particularly strong car, those especially get me fired up. One of the GT games on the PS2, I remember one race where I could never beat the Ford GT40. It drove me crazy but it also made me fall in love with that car.
I think sim racers are good for those who have analytical minds. If you mess up on the corkscrew at Laguna Seca, you want to nail it next time. You want to improve your line going into that hair-pin turn or get your breaking just right. It's the quest to get as close to perfection as you personally can, intensified by the desire to simply win.
On the other hand, kart racers don't do much for me, especially those where luck is a factor. Random power-ups make me simply not care. The exception would be at a party but I haven't been to a party where people are playing video-games in a long time.
Arcade type racers vary greatly with me. I've had a blast with some NFS games and hated others, for example.
