If they shipped 500k in a week they´d probably sell out, again. 1m should be enough but problem is this cute little device sells to people who don´t really care when they buy this system. You´d just need another "Touch generations" title and numbers would be back at this level.
We are at a completely new situation with the DS now: If this thing sells to 35+ million people in Japan, weekly numbers would probably be as high as just 10k a week, but the software would still sell like hot cakes ---> this is completely new, everytime in the past, a system stopped selling it was because interest was slowing down. With the NDS, system sales will slow down not because of the lack of demand but because there would be no people anymore to buy one. This is crazy, nothing else...
And now let´s wait what happens to the US numbers, now where the DS sells (thanks to Pokemon) to younger gamers, too and parents start to see this system... I think US numbers will just increase this year... next step should be China and Nintendo could sell 200 Million consoles worldwide... I guess DS was just the beginning and DS 2 will sell even better, because now Nintendo KNOWS what they have to do and publishers know it, too... Imagine something like portable books on the DS 2, learning helpers for students which would at that time be liked to be seen even by teachers - cuz they´d know what a DS is - ,things like social skill trainers in the whole world, a camera, but not to whatch your opponent while gaming, but to point at famous buildings for recieving Data from your DS - this would be a point where everyone would need a DS, and it would be a point where videogames were something like books, movies, theatres, TV, music... culture. Think of such a situation, how crazy it could be... and don´t tell me this is far away, just look at Japan, it already happened.
And with markest like China or India targeted, too selling 250 million consoles wouldn´t even be a big success. there wouldn´t be too many hardware makers, cuz publishers know who could have success in a battle and the brand of a console would still be important. You could solve this problem if Sony, Microsoft and Big N would be clever and sign contracts with publishers (so they can only develope for their systems).
Back in 1985, if someone told you there would once be a console to sell 100 million you laughed at him - but it came true. Now don´t laugh at people who say selling 200 million consoles is just dreaming, it could come true sooner than you think.
Couldn´t it, Johnlucas? ;)
