Forums - Gaming - DmC vs DMC4. Breaking down DmC

http://plebegaming.wordpress.com/2014/08/17/dmc-vs-dmc4-breakdown-and-review-part-1/

Wall of text warning. Character action games are a genre I have a lot of enthusiasm for, particularly the DMC franchise. I'm breaking things up into parts because just talking about one game gets a little out of hand.

I was inspired to write about this because of a debate I had on this site about DmC being worth a PS4 HD rerelease. When I finally got around to doing a full playthrough of the game, I came away thinking more positively of it than my first impressions and encounter. It's a decent, but flawed, entry into the genre. While I know the bar for what's deserving of an HD rerelease is at an all time low, I still don't think the game is worth it from a quality stand point. There are other familiar titles from around the same time frame that are more deserving of the "more HD" HD treatment.

Around the Network

I'd agree with most of that. Dante never grew on me at all, to be perfectly honest, but I guess that's as much one person's experience as anything else. It's decent as a standalone title, and quite honestly I think it would've been much better as that considering the backstory could very well be mistaken as something entirely original were it not for the returning names.

Can't say an HD rerelease would inspire me much.

Well, the way I see it is that at the start Dante was just a foulmouthed punk, drinking and doing drugs, living in a camper on the docks, and not going to amount to much in general. By the end though, his attitude problem cleared up quite a bit, he became strong enough to back his claims up, he took up a cause, and he actually started to become a hero. While still not a perfect character, it was a vast improvement, and I simply liked him better at the end of the story.

I think the Nephilim thing was stupid though. I know it was necessary for one of the overarching, preachy themes, but I think it would have been easier to relate the twins with a human element to the character instead of some hybrid super race. I know it's a stretch in a world like DMC, but a major point of DMC3 was that Dante embraced his human side while Vergil pursued his demonic blood.
