Well, the way I see it is that at the start Dante was just a foulmouthed punk, drinking and doing drugs, living in a camper on the docks, and not going to amount to much in general. By the end though, his attitude problem cleared up quite a bit, he became strong enough to back his claims up, he took up a cause, and he actually started to become a hero. While still not a perfect character, it was a vast improvement, and I simply liked him better at the end of the story.

I think the Nephilim thing was stupid though. I know it was necessary for one of the overarching, preachy themes, but I think it would have been easier to relate the twins with a human element to the character instead of some hybrid super race. I know it's a stretch in a world like DMC, but a major point of DMC3 was that Dante embraced his human side while Vergil pursued his demonic blood.
