Look up the threads and articles about the ps3 being discontinued due to low sales. When the ps3 launched and the shortages ended, the doom was overwhelming. You might not have noticed if, perhaps, you were not a ps fan, but it was real. Even friends of mine who weren't anything close to gamers were telling all about how terriblly the ps3 was doing in 2008.

The sales are not awful to me, but they were bad considering how much better the wii and xb360 were doing and the sales of ps2 (as opposed to gamecube and xbox). They were bad since Sony expected much more from the console and they had to cut the price several times to the point of the company bleeding tons of money. You don't cut the price so soon if the sales are actually good. Neither Sony nor the gaming community saw the sales as good, so no they weren't good.

OK! Maybe you're right about the PS3, but the 3DS' situation is still nowhere as bad as the PS3's situation... :-/

Agreed. PS3 was bleeding money for years and it was a huge disaster for Sony. The 3ds on the other hand is making ninty money, so definitely not doing badly. My point was whether comparing a console with its predecessor is valid, which I think it is.

This was mostly the conjecture PS2 fanboys-turned-360 fanboys trying to make themselves feel better about not a having a PS3 for whatever reason (mostly the overwhelming pricing from 2006-2009). I don't know if we can say the bad publicity was as drastic, nor am I saying they were wrong to not a have a PS3 at the time (although I bet they would never have given the 360 any consideration had the PS3 and 360 been evenly-priced simultaneously from the get go) but the propanganda in context wasn't any different from those who went NES-to-Genesis instead of NES-to-SNES when Nintendo's marketing failed to justify the pricepoint of the SNES early on.

Though I do agree with this, I still think that the sales were bad, because Sony thought so. The early price cut is a clear sign of that. People can debate all they want, but at the end of the day Sony is a company that invests money on their products. If they are not happy, it means that they are not being successful, which they weren't with the ps3. So I stand by my point. The ps3 did not do well. The 3ds isn't doing great either, but it's doing considerably better.

And...?

It has outsold it so far. It's the fastest selling console ever released vs. the highest selling console ever. It's a valid comparison.

Its not fastest selling console anymore lol. Its fell behind the Wii last month as shown the comparsion chart articles on this site.

I'm sure they did/do. But I mention the Genesis/SNES scenario because the SNES was eventually positively-received despite not doing as well as the NES. I'm sure this will be the case for the 3DS in due time. Obviously the profitable aspects are a different story, but then Sony's financial woes shouldn't be exclusively attributed to the PS3, as much as it didn't help their situation.

Uhm, it's still the fastest selling console though. It just depends on how you define that. Fastest selling in its launch period? Fastest selling out of the gate?

But, having said that, PS4 can still easily be compared to PS2. They will follow more similar sales curves than PS4 vs. Wii due to both being Sony consoles and both likely having long legs.

Yup, that's a good point.

As of today the 3DS has sold 44.2 million units and is currently selling over 100k consoles a week. For what is taught of a dying breed, I think that those numbers are amazing. Sure it is far from doing what the DS did during it's time but it is still doing amazinlgy well, and will continue doing well atleast until the end of 2015 with a ton of games which include 3 pokemon games, Super smash bros and a ton of third party games which will surely sell units to kids such as lego batman 3. So why do some of you guys bash the 3DS for it's sales?

It's not selling badly, but it isn't selling anywhere near as well as some people were sure it would sell.  For instance, I predicted it would sell less than half as well as the DS, and people called me crazy.  But it is now clear to these people that it is gonna stop at around 60-70m, and for their crazy 160m predictions this is terrible.

Because it's not selling 100k a week like the site suggests.

Shipped 590k Jan - March and 820k April - June.

Looking at US and Japan numbers it's not going to be shipping much more than 1.2m July - Sep either.

The DS didn't have to deal with this

Why?

I'm saying the handheld will release in more than a year, maybe even 1.5 years. 3DS sales will be down to 60-70k at most per week by then. They can't live on that forever and another 60k from WiiU.

This is exactly what Sega did, they kept releasing consoles to fast, they lost customer loyalty and now look at them
