Forums - Sony Discussion - Why The Last of Us Remastered Shouldn’t Really Exist

I played it on PS3 and loved it! Missed playing it and now I have it again. This is all just partisan fanboy whining because the game is so well praised by the industry and it's an exclusive. Games that are "younger" than it, with fewer accolades, and are multiplatform don't receive hourly articles detailing opinions on why they shouldn't exist. Naysayers can continue to say otherwise but this is purely based on the fact that the game is considered a classic and it's on a console that many wish wasn't currently destroying the competition.

Yeah, Ive been convinced of it having a reason to exist. Not that its needed though. The remaster doesnt really fix anything that was wrong with the PS3 version and the visual improvements are not that big. I just dont think it warrants a rerelease yet. If it came out on the PS5 or something, then maybe...

Um... what's the distinction between having a reason to exist, and being needed? o.O I mean, technically speaking, NO videogame is 'needed,' but if it makes the company that releases it money, AND has plenty people who are happy with the purchase, then it's more or less fulfilled its purpose. I could argue that this keeps the people that didn't have a PS3, but now own a PS4, need this so they won't have to ALSO buy a PS3 just to try it. The people who owned it before, and are buying it for the new system, are icing on the cake, and while you're right that they don't need it, they pretty clearly WANT it.

Nobody 'needs', what, a seventh (9th or 10th, counting the non-FPS ones?) Halo game at aaaaall, (Talking about Halo 5 here, not Halo MCC) or a 7th God of War game, but Microsoft makes money, Sony makes money, and there are plenty of people who will want it, and be happy they bought it, so boom, their existence is validated.

TL;DR: No videogame is needed. (...except maybe Half Life 3. T____T )

It has a reason to exist since making it work on the PS4 is difficult. So they might as well remaster it then.

Its not needed because it doesnt add anything to the game.

Its been like 8 years FFS...

See Final Fantasy XV.  I think we'll get an update soon.

Don't even compare Team Ico to SE, please.  SE LOVES to announce things that aren't even being developed while 4 games are already in production.  They annouched FFXIV before FFXIII even released!

Then maybe tell us whats going on, instead of teasing us with it?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with that. I'm not even looking forward to it myself, I hopped aboard the Sony train before the whole Last Guardian thing even begaaan. xD Anyway, allow me to sum up, I believe, all the pertinent points spread across this thread into a SINGLE post for you, so that you can get all the points.

1) There is no 'port to PS4' button. To put it in VERY basic terms, the PS3 speaks a completely different language than the PS4; so moving a game to it, you need to translate it, from start to finish, into the new language, and there is no 'Automatic Translate' button. In layman's terms, it would be like trying to translate The Bible from Aramaic (very old language) into English... only you have no Google Translate. Just lots of old books, a pencil, and PLENTY of patience and painstaking work. In many ways, the Xbox 360 has an easier time of it, because their architecture was a lot easier to work with, a lot closer to the 'normal' design; which is why so many multiplats looked and functioned better on 360.

2) There IS demand for the game, not just from those who played it once and loved it, but from those who jumped ship from Xbox, or moved from Nintendo, basically folks who didn't OWN a PS3 and are interested in the title. I spent some time around a Playstation forum, back in the wake of E3 2013, when people were LIVID about the old policies (before they were reversed a week later.) Plenty of new people, a flood even, joining the forums from Xbox, or Nintendo, and more than a few mentioned 'Aw yeah, that Naughty Dog game looks awesome, I hope they eventually bring it over, cause I don't have a PS3.'

3) Sony CAN track who has, or hasn't played it, because of trophies. As game trophies are uploaded to the servers, Sony can literally see if you've played PS3 games, which ones you played, how far you got in each. So it's not hard for them to KNOW if there's the potential for demand. If they say 'x percent of people didn't own a PS3,' then they say it because the person's registered accounts had NO PS3 trophies on it, suggesting they never played a PS3 game.

4) So, we've established there's demand for it; we've established Sony KNOWS there's demand for it; which means that if it does sell well, (and suggestions are it's selling quite well,) then how is it they SHOULDN'T have made it? o.O

If there is a reason to exist and there is a market there is a need... If you want to say that for you that have a PS3 and the game it isn't necessary ok we can take that.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Also, just to tick off more of the haters: On Tuesday morning the Walmart by my job has 2 rows of the game in their case. Roughly 10 copies. I didn't have the cash in the morning so I returned to the store later that afternoon and all had been sold. I decided to go to the Walmart by my house on my way from work and they too had sold out. The cashier in electronics says to me: "Is that game that good? It's all people have been asking for today."
So yeah, it's probably going to sell rather well. Then all you're going to see are posts about how we PS4 fans are sheep and puppets. Them we'll see similar sales trends for Halo MCC and Windwaker HD.

We`ll also see many more remasters...

The market will decide if it should or should not exist

And? Think of how many games have released Game of the Year editions, after launch; Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Batman Arkham City, Halo 4, Red Dead Redemption, Dragon Age: Origins, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, etc, etc, ETC. These are, literally, the same game, with DLC bundled, sometimes sold slightly cheaper than the original game's launch price, sometimes not even. None of them ever 'add anything' either.

In fact, those GOTY editions have even LESS of a reason to exist than The Last of Us Remastered, because they don't have any visual upgrades whatsoever, and release on the same platform the original game was on. But they still sell.

Again. People want to own it. Sony makes a profit from it. Both consumer and company come out of the encounter satisfied. That is literally the ULTIMATE embodiment of what makes something 'needed.'

It was announced as FFXIII Versus.  I was just pointing out that other companies are just as bad, if not worse.

Versus was FFXV.  And yeah I know what your point was, I just really dislike that Square-Enix does this so much.

Never said the GOTY editions was worth it either. They sold well and now everyone does it.
