so game prices haven't gone up since then yet production costs have sky rocketed. I see why so many devs are closing

game prices have actually gone down, people just like to conveniently forget about inflation and let their sense of entitlement run riot

I have being saying this for years...I really think the price of games should go up by $10- $15. Devs really need this. It has come to the point that for the average developer to suceed or even stay afloat in this industry. They have to sell at the very least 1.5 million copies for every game produced or they start losing money. We need as many developers as possible so that new and fresh ideas can easily arise...rather than re-ashing the same thing over and over again (yeah, I am looking at you Activison and EA) because it is the safest thing to do.

Unfortunately if we started a petition to have the prices of games increased, we would probably be receiving the highest and most obnoxious form of redicule and hate within minutes.

Would suffer the same fate, lol.
Can give it a try if you want though, I can promise you that 60% of the responses will be banworthy

lol you are right, I rather not.
But it would be interesting to see people rant about such things in some pompous, entitled, "first world problem" way....

Or, you could support game developers via kickstarter.
The thing to remember about game prices is that that money doesn't make its way to the developer in whole or, sometimes, even in part.
If your primary thought is "Developers make great games. Adjusted game prices have gone down. I want to support these great games" then your thought shouldn't be paying more at the store. You're just supporting a holding or publishing company at that point. You should be looking at ways to support the developers themselves and the best way to do that currently is by crowdfunding games that sound cool to you like Mighty No. 9 or Skullgirls.

The problem is, because game production costs so much now, more often than not, games tend to be shorter than they would normally have been, or take much longer between itterations to make, so people already believe that the asking price is too much, even though it's definitely less than it used to be, the idea of raising the prices further by $10-20, making the average new game $69.99 - $79,99, while for a good cause, and bringing the prices to meet their 1995-1999 ranges, would result in a large portion of people moving away from buying new, and either run the risk of collapse, or run the risk of more people opting for used, which reduces the total sales of each game further.
The only real counter for this would be ingame advertising or a shift in pricing model, with more dlc, two counters that have been tried already and have almost unanimousely been slaughtered by gamers.
They wont pay more for the game, and the alternatives to increase revenue will be mostly rejected too, but at the same time, everyone expects more than they actually get, and want that additional content to be at no extra cost too.
The next video game crash is going to be driven, almost entirely, by peoples sense of entitlement.
I didn't know consoles were so cheap in 1996. I can't remember what I paid for N64, PS2 over a thousand guilders at least.
http://tweakers.net/nieuws/12448/europese-release-ps2-uitgesteld-prijs-verhoogd.html
It was worse, they expected 1200 Guilders / 557 Euros on release. Europe really got shafted back then.
I also spend almost 6000 guilders (2700 Euros) on a gaming PC, so it was all relative.
CAD 499,- for a PS4 is peanuts now.
Checking my old PC games from 2000, they used to be 99,95 guilders / 45.43 Euros.
That's including 17.5% tax back then (currently 21% glad I don't live there anymore)
So 38.66 Euros pre tax in 2000. That's 51.67 Euros after inflation, equals USD 69.40. Cheaper nowadays.
Also in Europe, 49.99 Euros new physical pc games, including the 21% tax. (41.31 Euros pre tax / USD 55.40)
