I didn't know consoles were so cheap in 1996. I can't remember what I paid for N64, PS2 over a thousand guilders at least.

It was worse, they expected 1200 Guilders / 557 Euros on release. Europe really got shafted back then.
I also spend almost 6000 guilders (2700 Euros) on a gaming PC, so it was all relative.
CAD 499,- for a PS4 is peanuts now.
Checking my old PC games from 2000, they used to be 99,95 guilders / 45.43 Euros.
That's including 17.5% tax back then (currently 21% glad I don't live there anymore)
So 38.66 Euros pre tax in 2000. That's 51.67 Euros after inflation, equals USD 69.40. Cheaper nowadays.
Also in Europe, 49.99 Euros new physical pc games, including the 21% tax. (41.31 Euros pre tax / USD 55.40)
