I agree with the OP that Capcom's Mega Man team was running out of steam by time the SNES came out and needed a change in pace, and we ended up getting the brilliant Mega Man X. MM7 & 8 were oddballs because they weren't 8-bit, but they were okay. But MM9 was great and MM10 was pretty good, but not as good as 9. If I had to rank the classic series from most to least favorite, here's how I'd do so:

MM1
MM9
MM4
MM10
MM8
MM7
MM5
MM6
