I think it really speaks of Nintendo's need to branch out more. Their games normally sell well respective of the system install base because system owners really trust in the quality of their titles, but very few of those titles can actually sell systems. Outside of Smash Bros, Mario and Zelda they don't have any system sellers. Maybe X could have been one if it arrived earlier in the systems life cycle :(
