In terms of hardware it has a chance too. I remember thinking PS3 would never get ahead of 360, and it did. And as a rule, Sony will support it even more in other countries like Brazil, Argentina, maybe China, and others, like it was with the PS2. So there's still a window for PS3 domination. It would be a shocker!

A major pricecut would boost a lot in terms of sales. A 500gig PS3 here is only about €100 cheaper than a brand new sensational PS4, so it makes a difference when people think about choosing their console. A 12gig is also not a very good option, even for the more casual audience. Ps3 needs a cheaper model that doesn't sacrifice its internal storage so much.

The ps3 has been around for 9 years.

Lets assume it lasts as long as the ps2 (13 years)

That would basically mean that the ps3 has to sells more consoles in the next 4 years than the wiiU is expected to make in its lifetime (by a lot of vgchartz users).

Think about that.

i think it might be possible, if the PS3 keeps getting great Japanese games like Persona 5, Tales games, Ars no surge etc... for some year (3 or more).

anyway the PS3 deserves a lot of respect,

-coming out 1 year after the 360.
-100 bucks more expensive
-with a bad marketing campaign
-A horrible pre launch E3
-the "worst" version of multiplats (at least at the beginning right now they are pretty much identical),
-And with very few games

and even then it still competed really well with the 360, to the point that we officially don't know if it has outsold it now or not due to the lack of official info, but i guess most people out there have no doubt that it will outsell it (if it hasn't already), add to that the great first party support and the enormous amount of exclusives that it got (and its still getting) and well... its a great console.

The PS3 basically needs to sell  roughly 5 million every year, but I just don't see that happening! :-/

It's not looking likely at the moment. But we also have to remember that the official price is still 199 euros/dollars and there are still exclusive games waiting to be released for it, such as Persona 5. A price cut to 149 and some sales spikes when those few exclusives release and it might manage to crawl up to 100 million.

No, I don't think the ps3 is going to manage to sell like its predecessors did in the shadow of their successors because last gen was so long. Part of the reason for ps4's record launch, really all three console launches--which were very good--is that people were aching for new hardware. Sony would probably be better suited phasing out the ps3 sooner rather than later.
