So everyone's heard gamers say "We want innovation!" 

The thing is, they don't. All the top selling Mario games were 2D platformers. The innovative ones, like Mario Galaxy, sold much, much less!

Even games that had high metascore that strayed from the usual sold less. Mario Party 8. 8 million dollars. Ocarina of time. 7.8 million.

You're confusing mainstream gamers with hardcore gamers. Hardcore gamers are the nerds, like us. Mainstream gamers are the COD and Madden players. They make up the majority of the industry (sad but true). 

If it were up to us, gaming would be at it's zenith. But we don't have the numbers for that.
