Forums - Gaming - If a "next gen" game is also on ps3/x360 (ala Destiny) Is it really Next Gen?

Is last gen holding current gen/next gen back in multiplat games?

It's basically a publicity matter. If you put the first game on the older console, maybe when their users upgrade to 8th gen they will buy the game. Also, in this moment we can't compare the 13 million consoles aprox. of the PS4One with the 160 millions aprox of the PS360.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I used to think that developers are making a mistake by continuing to support old consoles, but after learning that X360 version of Watch Dogs outsold XOne version, I realized I was wrong.
It doesn't bother me at all that there are cross gen games, I only have PS4, but it takes away nothing from my enjoyment if people still play games on last gen consoles.

No it's not next gen, it's cross gen (we already have a name for it!). In my mind they're essentially gen 7.5 titles.

Destiny is still a great looking game, and one of the largest cross gen differences we've seen, but ultimately it's still had to confine itself to what can be linearly scaled down to the previous gen. As you said, the PS3 version is functionally identical.

For some reason that doesn't stop people trying to use cross gen titles as proof of the "small gen jump". They should really see how flawed that argument is when the jump between AC4 to ACU or Ghost to AW is larger than the difference between the cross gen versions of the original title

advance warfare is cross gen

I never said it wasn't :p I was pointing out the huge visual jumps we've already been seeing in the next gen. Hence why using current cross gen titles as a reference for the capabilities of the 8th gen systems doesn't make much sense.

AW still isn't exactly the best looking game ever, but next gen platforms being the lead has done wonders for it. It will still be relatively close to the 7th gen, but a bigger jump than we saw with Ghosts.

Then you have ACU which looks downright amazing. A tad unstable at present (understandably, given how many character models they're trying to use simultaneously), but still amazing.

Shouldn't Destiny on PS4 and X1 be 60FPS when the last gen versions are holding them back so much?

Why don't PS4 and X1 versions of Watch_Dogs include the effects that you can unlock with a mod in the PC version? Because the last gen versions are holding them back?

This is a quote from Bundgie after being asked why the PS4/X1 version are 30fps:

"A lot has to do with performance. We’re cross-platform, so we had to be very delicate with all four consoles, making sure they have the same experience, that it looks as good as it possibly can on all these consoles. A lot goes into that, from geometry to textures to post effects to particles to how many players you get on the screen. We’re always balancing that out to make sure everyone gets the same experience."

That pretty much sums up the cross gen situation :/

The beta struggles to get stable 30FPS. I'm sure that the final version can have a stable framerate, but Destiny @ 1080p 60FPS simply wasn't possible on the new consoles.

So, they're limiting the framerate that everyone gets the same experience, but improving the graphics doesn't affect the experience?

Yeah, they probably had to limit some things that it's the same game on all consoles, but that should make it even easier to get a higher framerate on PS4 and X1.

I don't believe a single word... The beta struggles to get stable 30FPS. I'm sure that the final version can have a stable framerate, but 60FPS simply wasn't possible on the consoles.

It is a beta :p Though I've heard of no major performance issues. I know DF reported the game has a frame pacing issue because of an even spread (generally 29's or 31's), but that's a technical issue rather than a resource one. It was in the alpha too, so it's disappointing to see they haven't fixed it yet, but hopefully by launch they've worked out what's causing it. It really fucks with the input delay.

I agree they couldn't hit 60fps (at least not right now), but they could certainly achieve more than 30fps. Or at the very least if they wanted to lock it at 30, the game itself should look better (that's not to say it doesn't look great, just could have done more). Unfortunately it's not worth the effort when you're designing the game to scale between gens.

The game itself is somewhat proof of the issue. A several year development cycle, massive team, massive budget and releasing almost a year after the PS4/X1's launch, yet it's visually outclassed by some 8th gen exclusive launch titles :/

On the bright side, things have improved a lot. Games like Destiny and AW have a much stronger focus on the next gen that previous titles did. The gen difference still ends up being demonstrated by IQ/LOD or frame rates, but it's a nice improvement.

[inset "the gap is widening" joke here]

If COD AW isn't one of the best looking games, neither is ACU, EA ufc or any other "next gen" exclusive title. You just said AW is big jump over ghosts and yet it still available for last gen consoles. For me, last gen holding back is just a lame excuse to the developers make less work and force people to purchase the "next gen" hw. The real problem is that this generation isn't capable enough to improve during its lifetime like the  previous generations

We reap what we sow

It's cross-gen which means it looks better as it would be possible on last gen but graphics are probably also the only real improvement.

If the game would be only on PS4 and Xbox One it would probably be another game in some parts. And if it would be also only something like the geometry.

If anything is on anything other than PS4 it will always be perceived as gimped.
