Forums - Microsoft - MS's Harvey Eagle: Doesn't personally see graphical differences, says resolution differences a 'perception challenge'

blind mans buff

XBO put MS in a bad spot.

If games are 900p on XBO and 1080p on PS4 they can achieve similar effects on both consoles, albet still a bit weaker on XBO, but close enough. However, this slaps a big ugly number that even casuals can see which version is better.

If MS forces 1080p on all games, they can avoid the obvious numerical loss, but the graphical differences will be obvious, performance and visuals will suffer.

There is no amount of spin, PR, Programming, or secret sauce that can fix this issue.

Stage 6

Man, that's so accurate it's scary.

@ OP

Yea, only a blind man could not see the differences.  What's hilarious is that the same people who say it's not a big deal, or can't tell the difference, were raving like mad about a few extra blades of grass or a SLIGHTLY higher res or a few extra frames in a 360 game compared to a PS3 game.  Now,...refer to the picture above.

I know the minor differences does not really matter that much, at least not to me. But come on saying you cant perceive any difference is just rubbish.

Wow lol a lot of BS from that origin guy but he is not alone...

PR or not he is right and a lot of you are wrong.

@originwjatever if you still read that
first higher resolution doesn't make anything look better it makes things look sharper but certainly not better.... Yeah sure if you have your nose on the screen it might to some extend... But that's about it especially with video games where no matter how many pixel you add it won't make more detail appear than what the creator created in the first place anyway...
and with real picture or video while in some cases sharpness makes more detail visible which could not be seen at a lower red it actually makes some look worse buy revealing too much of what was there in the first place... I.e. Some old TV shows look horrible in HD because everything looks fake and all the details that were filtered by the lens or the post processing now appears...

ok now that we cleared that more pixel just makes things look sharper and in no way better (it does not improve what's already there)

lets go to the second fact again, you said even on small screens you can see it... True at 1 foot from a PC screen you can see it (if you have a good monitor which more than 80% of people don't have btw) but to be frank I'd rather play or watch video at 720p on a big TV than 4k on a 24" computer screen sitting alone, but that's me... To each their own...
anyway if you are in a living room setting chances are your seating position and the TV position are at a fix point. And in that case the smaller the screen the less you will see the difference and you can argue all you want than is actually a biophysical fact... Yeah some people have better eye sight than other bit unless you are a member of doctor Xavier team you are a liar if you tell me you can see the difference between 1080p/720p after you reach a certain threshold of seating distance to screen size ratio...

anyway now that we physically proved that all other things kept equal the smaller the screen the less you can see the difference...

you have to consider the untrained eye of most non hardcore, the fact that focus is not on pixel count when watching /gaming for most people, and motion is distracting to do pixel count if you don't know what to look for I can guaranty you that on a smaller than 60" TV a shit tone of people if picked randomly wouldn't see the difference in a normal setting, playing/watching normally...

now all that crap being repeated for the X time... I'd much rather see dev focus on that almost irrelevant factor which is resolution and work harder on frame rate or actually make the games look better instead of sharper... Like actual details, lightning, physics, AI, art style.... So yeah that console war and Sony is actually making games look worst than they should... Resolution war is damaging more than improving games... clap clap clap Sony...

You were actually making a point until you made this Sony's fault. How is it their fault that developers are coming out and saying the resolution is inferior on the Xbox counterpart?!

It's like he couldn't wait to throw Sony under the bus for something.

It's like he couldn't wait to throw Sony under the bus for something.

Not that this isn't expected from one like Endimion.

But the amount of spin and denial in his comment is concerning.

Higher resolution DOES make things look better. Take the same game, with everything the same on two different resolution. The higher res version will look better. Yes, sharper is better, but it also makes the textures look crisper as well... Anyway... Don't know why I bother. Can't really put any sense in people with a clear agenda like him.

not again......

720p vs 1080p is very apparent. 900p to 1080p, no so much, imo.

Not that I really care that much. Res is overrated, if you ask me. I'd take a 720p IPS over a 1440p backlit TFT LCD anyday, when it comes to monitors, and I'd take Mario Kart 8 in 480p over Mario Kart Wii in 1080p.

I don't know what his intentions were. I mean even those that are impartial to just one specific console can at least admit he brought up some valid points. However, just to say that all of this hoopla that's going on is Sony's fault is complete b.s. You can thank the media, gamers, etc for that. Mainly the media since all I see on Yahoo news is graphics this and resolution that.

Am I alone in thinking most normal gaming people have moved on to more a mind set of how fun games like Mario Kart 8, Sunset Overdive, Titanfall, Little big planet 3 are rather than resolution. Yes LOU, Unchartered 4, The Order and Driveclub look to be works of art but overall that won't mean 2015s game of the year won't be some lower resolution Wii U game, that blew everyone away and got 10/10s across the board.

It seems to me that every single month these PR guys come out and insult every single one of us. We spend all that money on GFX cards and new TVs for a reason. These mindless morons at IGN and these PR guys do way more damage with this sitting an inch away from a TV a thousand meters wide. (Anybody noticed how that TV size has grown in inflation btw. When we first heard this junk it was above 32", then above 46", then 50" and now it is 60" - Wow just wow.)

I'm sorry MS but you need to reign in yourPR department to never mention it again. Especially when it changes from game to game. We all saw your E3 this year. We all heard you use the exact words of "All in glorious and beautiful 1080p" I'm sick of being called an idiot every month, so I will stick to my PC, PS4 and Wii U and for the first time ever not own MS's machine. Never think for one minute think it was because of any 720-1080 differance, it was just the fact you decided to insult me every chance you got. And no all the viral marketing in the world won't change the truth either.
