Well it seems the rumors were true if you beleive the rumors. Goldeneye was in development for arcade, but has since been cancelled supposedly, because they couldn't get permission to use the Bond license. A tragic shame to say the least if this is all true. I will let everyone check their secondary sources of choice since it is spreading, and the stories seem somewhat contradictory. However I have a serious question.

Why the hell should the Bond license matter at all. I wouldn't play the game, because it is bond nor would anyone else. They would get the game, because it was a very good game. So why not work the licensed material out of the game, and go it without the license. Name the game something like Golden Gunning.  Rename the characters, and wipe a convoluted plot over the single player events. Hell it could be really ridiculous and people would just view it as a spoof rather then a serious work. The way that the old Mystery Science Theater show mocked a movie with voice over.

I would gladly play with Generic Korean Dwarf against, Generic Russian Babe, Man in Tuxedo, and Lame Accent Man. I would play in the level named The Aztec Ruin. We would play with a weapon set that only included real world weapons. Then after spending a few hours playing that I would load the single player game, and play in my favorite level named Arecibo. I will be chasing down a guy who plans to steal the worlds supply of latex. Which I find laughable.

Perhaps if the rumors are true. Then perhaps Microsoft might resurrect the game if the players express the fact that they could care less if Bond or his Cohorts are in it to begin with. I really could care less I didn't buy the game originally for the license. I bought it originally for the fantastic multiplayer, and the single player goodness. None of that had to do with the license. The license could have been anything or nothing for all I care.

What do you guys think?

I hope it does come out on XBox Live for the newer generation to play a classic shooter game released over 10 years ago.

Methinks if they can't get everything squared away with Nintendo and Activision, they should abandon 007 and, instead, give the treatment to the original Perfect Dark game, which is far superior in every facet.

This game looked really good in HD and in motion, but I agree with the OP and say wy not just make it a generic game based off of the same code.

I also agree with Dolla Dolla, they could just work on doing Perfect Dark also.

Considering a gaming magazine actually published pictures of a HD 007......I think to think (atleast for myself) that MS/Rare's denials aren't as valid as they could be.

As said from other rumors, Rare is working on a Goldeneye-type game that *is* goldeneye, but has enough freedom to stray from IP issues with the big N and Activision. If this was legitimate, then MS could easily deny the 007 IP, since the new version wouldn't "technically" be that IP, as if they confirmed it, they could get sued since it's not their IP.

So I still believe in miracles, dreams, and a 007 HD Remake - regardless of name.

Obviously if the rumor is to be believed then Nintendo obviously has no say in matters in respect to this game whatsoever. Microsoft wouldn't have started physical development on this game if there was zero likelihood of getting it to market. Which would be the case if Nintendo had any say.

That said it would be a matter of what the license holder is asking for. Which might be what would stop Microsoft for instance if Acclaim asked for a million dollars for the license. That might cause Microsoft to abandon the project. That would be an unreasonable fee especially if they were going to charge all of five dollars for the game to consumers.

What I am saying is that it would probably cost a pittance to remove the licensed material from the game in the first place. Microsoft might think the license matters, but over ninety percent of consumers don't. They feel it hurts the sales prospects fine just add a couple more maps, or a couple more modes. For less then a fifty thousand dollar investment they could turn a five million dollar profit.

Make a Wii port aswell as a XBox 360 HD version. Both parties will be happy.

Darklord - the issue is that it seems like Nintendo wants the IP all for themselves - IE, 007 on VC and no XBLA version, as the X360 would get the much superior version with Online.

@DarkLord2008

Why would Microsoft do that unless Nintendo gave them something in return. Which isn't likely to happen. Besides as I said in my previous post if Microsoft did enter development for this title there is little doubt that what Nintendo wants or thinks matters very little. They would have no say in the question as in the way the guy who previously owned your car has no say into whom you sell it to after your done with it.

Exactly.  Nintendo doesn't want MS to have the advantage on this.  The solution would be to publish their own version on WiiWare with updated graphics and online play, but that's not going to happen.
