Instead of paying out the ass for a higher profile dev, they can pay for an exclusive from a dev that makes great quality games, even if ithey don't happen to sell that well. Instead, Sony pays for all these indie timed exclusives, which are average or worse at best. |
Sony, previous to destiny, have said they dont pay for exclusives. The exclusives that are made for their systems are made by third parties who want the perks of being exclusive. Atlus and vanillaware both doing fine making exclusives for ps3 and vita as was sega. Of course there were plenty of studios that shuttered after aaa failures that were exclusive to sony, like the dev that made haze.
anyway back to ur point though, u said "a dev that makes great quality games"... but thats not really yhe case overall. Remedy had max payne 1, sold it, and didnt make anoyher game for 8 years. Cryteks games are all pretty crappy. The killer instinct devs never made a single good game. Rare hasnt made a good game in almost a decade. Capcom is shit, destroyed resident evil and every other franchise they have, also killed megaman. Good studios? I disagree.

Hardships means MS has more bargaining power I guess
To be fair they spend their money in smart ways when they spend a lot. Gears was a huge pickup for them. Would've been bad not to have them exclusive again

Maybe microsoft does it for a good deaæ on exclusivity. Maybe they offer to fund a game and then give a very low percentage to devs... So if the developers get to keep their jobs and maybe 50-100k bucks they consider it a good deal since all they care about is survival right now. This is unlikely to be true for all of them. Especially with titanfall where it seemed like EA decided it should be exclusive for bags and bags of money

Remedy has made a few great games developing for Micrsoft. Capcom, despite it's recent failures, still makes good games. Platinum Games, who I think is overrated, makes good games. But hey, let's just point out the few crappy devs and then point out a pile of sh*t like Resident Evil 6 from Capcom so our argument carries weight, right?
Isn't it the same situation with SONY with:
-Superbot (Sony All Stars)
-Zipper
-Liverpool Studio
-BigBig studios
-Eat Sleep Play
Moral is everyone's struggling. You make a couple bad games and thats what happens.
The way I see it is MS is giving these studios a second chance. Giving Insomniac funding after FUSE, giving Remedy more funding after the flop of Alan Wake, etc.
Hmmmm, never looked at it that way. Maybe the companies that took money from MS were already having issues with cash. Maybe thats why they went exclusive so easily, they simply needed the money.
I think this gen is going to be a rude awaking for a lot of 3rd party devs that are going exclusive.
So far i have not seen any of the devs benefit from it.
"Does MS have an astounding ability to take turds and polish them into gold? All these games have very high production value"
high investiment =/= high quality.
