Well if you have some external storage device then sure go ahead. Otherwise I wouldn't settle for the 8GB model.

Can you use an external HDD? I prefer those over USB flash drives.

im not sure if all work, i think u need one with external power. usb flash drives are so small that u hardly see them.
I haven't used the extra accessories for my Premium Wii U. Maybe I tried them out day 1 but they're mostly more unneccessary plastic on the table. The extra hard drive space is neat though, even though you can't buy many eShop games before you have to buy a hard drive or USB stick, that others have mentioned. After formatting and updates (after you have set the console up), you'll have 3 GB's of storage to use on an 8 GB Wii U. On the premium Wii U which has 32 GB's of storage, you'll have 25 GB for your use.
If you only buy retail games and maybe some VC games, you'll be fine, down the road you may need an extra hard disk drive though, which is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Go for it!
Yep.

I got a brand that NIntendo listed on their website - just to be sure. They have a list of tested external HDD.
I got a 2 TB for something like 90 Euro. A bit overkill, even though i'm going full digital this generation.

Oh cool, I probably won't need that much for the Wii U though but still cool none the less
I have concern over the storage space for basic things like game patches. But I guess if you have an external source, it's no problem. The rest of the content included with Premium packs is not worth much at all, unless you're getting say... MK8.
