The fourth gen was the golden age of gaming, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, it's a fact.

Fourth Gen was the best for me. No people saying "LOOK I'M PLAYING MATURE GAMES WOW I'M ADULT AND YOU ARE A KID"

I guess none of your friends had Mortal Kombat.

Depends on preferred genre - for me, being fan of P&C adventure games, cRPGs and military turned-based strategies, it's late 80s to late 90s.

I would definitely say 7th gen. The biggest install base of all time and literally everyone was playing some game due to the Wii and mobile gaming. Trust me people we are not gonna see another 300m install base for a very long time, and we will look back at this last generation as the one that brought us a lot of "Firsts."

How does userbase correlate with whether it's the Golden age or not? The question isn't which gen was the most popular...

It's just a small part of the reason it was the golden age since it shows more people than ever were playing consoles (So maybe I mean the golden age of console gaming, but I think that is what most of us are talking about anyways.)

-First massive open world games brought to the masses like Fallout and Skyrim

-First massively successful modern  FPS from COD4

-Some of the most inovative multiplayer games ever like Demon's Souls, MAG, Journey, and Read Dead Redemption.

-Games where you create and share content like LBP and FC2.

Come on people, this was the golden age.  That doesn't mean it's over, or that gaming will get worse even if it is...

I respect your opinion, but disagree. If anything this poll shows that each generation of gaming has gotten worse since the 4th, which I agree with. Sure last gen had a lot of technical innovations, but the over focus group tested, 100 million budget games have really killed a lot of the creativity and auteurs of game design which were there in the past. It also doesn't help that 4th and mainly 5th gens were the most paradign shifting generaions - nothing today can capture the wow factor and excitement of all the first experienced during the dawn of 3d gaming.

I can see what you mean about the dawn of 3D gaming, and the loss of Mid-sized games, but yeah I still don't think we are gonna see another console gen as prolific as the last gen for quite some time...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

The 6th generation is the only correct answer, folks!

This man gets it!

4th and 5th, both close runner-ups.

In my Opinion the Golden Age came during the 4th, 5th and 6th Gen. Each of these Gens paved the way for gaming, many AAA franchises were born and gaming became more and more mainstream. Gen 4 was the Beginning of JRPG dominance as well as the true birth of Handheld Gaming, Gen 5 was the mainstream Introduction to Advanced Graphics and the Birth of Action Adventure Dominance although the JRPG Crowd was still growing. Finally Gen 6 improved on all of Gen 5s greatness with even more AAA franchises being born and Controls being even more dynamic and refined, It was the Gen that Made FPS games what they are and gave us great titles such as Ratchet and Clank, Pikmin, Pokemon RSE, Call of Duty, Halo, Pokemon Colosseum, and finally Gen 6 brought us our first taste of Online Gaming, Anyone used to play CoD2 Big Red One Online? lol

6th. The PS2's domination enabled smaller, mid-tier, devs to get better exposure while focusing on ONE platform. Gaming exploded in the 5th gen with the introduction of a major company like Sony (largest selling console went from 60m to 100m a huge milestone to reach 9 digits) coming into the business, but the 6th solidified this and gave us large scale BC and major first party advancements. DMC, R&C, GoW, Halo, Melee, Wind Waker, FzeroGX, Psychonauts, GTA in 3d, Jak, SotC, Twisted Metal Black, MGS3, Spiderman 2, Sly, and so many more I can't even begin to remember them. Nintendo was cheaper and better on first party and controllers than ever, Dreamcast gave us an incredible lineup in its short life, and Xbox gave us Halo which was great lol

Most people with knowledge of the industry agree, its the early eighties.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_age_of_arcade_video_games

that is the golden age of arcade not the gaming as a whole.... console games took over arcade... by saying that, we can also assume now is the golden age of gaming because of mobile games like candy crush....

For me it was second gen, so many great memories with the Atari 2600.
