I'd have to go with 3D World as the overall better game.
Though, don't get me wrong, Sunshine is still a great game!

Yes. That definitely makes more sense.
I'd put the Mario games into these 5 tiers (not including Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land or Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island since those are really spin offs despite the names):
Masterpieces:
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario 64
Near Perfect:
Super Mario World
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Bros 3
Great:
New Super Mario Bros Wii
New Super Mario Bros U
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario Bros
Good:
New Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Decent, but not quite up to Mario standards:
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Bros 2 (US version)
Super Mario Bros 2 (Japanese version)
New Super Mario Bros 2
None of them are "bad" though.

It looks like It's going to change, though! Lots of people are posting 3D World now.
I don't like 3D World compared to the others so Sunshine gets my vote even though I haven't played it.
Yep.

I don't agree SMG2 was the same game as SMG1 at all. The powerups, level designs, and even the way you moved around galaxies were very different. Also Galaxy 2's controls were more refined, especially the camera and there were new gameplay mechanics like Yoshi. SMG1 has the innovation edge, but SMG2 has the perfection edge. Both are amazing and different enough to stand out on their own. It's almost like trying to say Super Mario 3d World is the same game as 3D Land.
Now Super Mario Bros 2 (the Japanese version) is literally the same freakin game as Super Mario Bros, just with an increased difficulty spike. And New Super Mario Bros 2 is virtually the same game as New Super Mario Bros. Hence why I put those 2 in the bottom tier.

Well, he probably just preferred the level design over 3D World. How stale the concept is doesn't really affect the actual quality of the design.
My heart says Sunshine but I feel like I should say 3D Worlds. It's a hard one but Sunshine stuck with me a bit more.
