Forums - PC - Having problems with my PC. Can't read DVD. Please help

So, I'm having a bit of a problem with my DVD on my PC. It won't read DVD's. It reads CD's alright; I have no problems at all listening to music, but I can't play DVD movies or games. What gives? I didn't have this problem before and I don't know what to do. Please help

I cant say for certain, but you likely have a broken DVD drive. If I recall correctly DVD are on a different lazer intensity use a thinner laserbeam than CD. So either the drive lazer can no longer work at that level or it cannot tell it is reading a DVD. Replacement drives arent all that expensive

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

You have desktop PC right? If so then it is easy to replace the DVD drive. You could even go with a Blu-ray drive if you wanted (should have dropped in price in the past few years). If you have a laptop then good luck replacing that. Probably possible but not as easy as a desktop.

I destroyed a DVD drive back in the day from pounding the top of my PC (yea I used to abuse my computers).  My rage only cost me about $40 (besides losing my keyboard holder tray on my cheap PC desk; ripped off the tray and broke it in half on my knee).  So far I haven't abused my current PC and I don't have plans to.  I try to keep my rage from making a fool out of me but I still like to abuse electronics that don't work properly.

Yeah, I think your drive is busted.
Replacement DVD drives cost around 20 bucks new these days, but if you're willing to spend more than that (60$) then buy a bluray drive, that's the most common disc format these days.

If your solution to PC issues is to ask for help on a videogame forum where the majority of the users aren't even capable of building their own PCs then I say you don't deserve to get it fixed.

Seriously, google it.

Either your driver or a hardware issue.

In either case, you sound ill-equipped for the problem.

So it ain't so you guys! Well, thank you all anyways, it seems like I have to get me a new DVD driver then... Might as well just buy me a new keyboard as well then. Recommendations? =)

Yes, I am indeed ill-equipped to handle this. I don't get PC's, and I never have.

Even if he isn't the best at computers it is pretty damn easy to take the case off a desktop computer, unscrew the DVD drive, pull it out, and put a new one in.  I even have full faith that he knows to have the power cord pulled from the computer when doing this.

I used to buy Pioneer DVD drives (back in my DVD burning craze which I don't partake in anymore), but probably any brand would work decent enough.  I never had any problems with my Pioneer drives and they usually came with Nero software which was nice.  Keyboards I just use a 10-15 dollar HP basic one.  So to buy a new keyboard and DVD drive it should only cost you about 30-40 dollars max unless you go way high brand on the keyboard.  I don't think you need a gaming keyboard so a regular keyboard should be good enough.   Keyboard I hate the most?  Those little Apple keyboards that are half the size.  They have a few at my work and they make me hit wrong keys sometimes.  I need a full sized keyboard due to being used to them my entire life.
