Either your driver or a hardware issue.

In either case, you sound ill-equipped for the problem.

Even if he isn't the best at computers it is pretty damn easy to take the case off a desktop computer, unscrew the DVD drive, pull it out, and put a new one in.  I even have full faith that he knows to have the power cord pulled from the computer when doing this.
