Forums - Nintendo - There's serious problems with Mario Kart 8

Well, I don't care at all about the star rating. I'll judge for myself how well I did. The online score numbers I'm not sure about. How come you considered it as a measure of how good people were when it was 5000 - 9999, but not now? What's different besides that the cap has been increased?

But getting too many coins in 1st place sounds annoying. It's something I've been reading about before as well. I ordered the game today so I should get to play it soon and try for myself.

If for example twelve racers with 8000 points each completed a race, more than half of them would get a positive score in Mario Kart 8. It is designed so that anyone who plays the game regularly will gain points unless all opponents have a significantly lower score or if you consistently place between 8-12.

In other words, the score has very little to do with your skill.

I'm not as good at this game as I was at Mario Kart Wii - This is the biggest flaw of the game.  It shares many similarities with Mario Kart 7.  The biggest, being that it isn't Mario Kart Wii.  It reminds me of when I was a young Doctor Who fan and Peter Davison refused to be Tom Baker.  I couldn't stand him for it.  I know many of you love MK:DD and some of you sickos think DK 64 is the best, but you you are wrong.  Why?  It is my opinion and my opinion is always right (to me).

So there you have it.  Mario Kart 8 is probably my favorite game this generation thus far, but it has it's share of problems.  Have you found any others or do you find it to be perfect?

If this is really whay you believe then i might have to get this game sooner rather than later. Especially if it shares similarities to MK7. MKWii IMHO was the weakest game in the series, besides maybe the GBA one. You didnt give any reasons why this is an issue but ill take a stab in the dark. YOu say you're not as good in it as you were with the WIi version. Well that makes perfect sense, since MKWIi felt more like a party game than an actual Kart racer. It felt like Ninty dumb down the difficulty so they could cater to the broadest amount of people as possible and it worked. Maybe you were never that good and MKWii gave you a false sense of skill.

Weren't the coins in the original just like the current ones?

While the 3 star method is pointless, the method on 3rd and Wii were super frustrating. It got to the point where it was complete luck. Are you getting hit with a blue shell 50 feet from the finish line (probably) or are you not. Once you got to a certain skill level, it had nothing to do with your racing and everything to do with if the computer screwed you over

The coin item is perfect. The speed they provide improves your total race time. If you have 10 coins, don't drop that banana peel you just got in first, keep it and ignore the item blocks. It's pretty simple.

Indeed. Once i got to 150cc, i never ditched a defensive item if i got it in first place unless i had to or got lightning'd.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I do agree about getting coins when your in first place, it even gives you them when you have 10 coins, so is 100% useless then.

Had a race today where every pick up was a coin, i still won but it also made it a boring race.

Judging by the faint "speed lines" when you pick up a coin, I think you still get a teensy temporary boost from coins, even after you have ten. It's not much, but all other things being equal, I think you're always better off picking up a coin than ignoring it.

I see how these problems annoy you...but I think calling them serious is a bit hyperbolic. Serious would be stuff like screen tearing and AI that flat out cheats. These just seem like a few quibbles that you have with the game that seem to mostly be associated with ego...that is, it doesn't reward yours enough both physically (stars, gamer score) and in gameplay where it seems you're not competing at the same level you were before. Isn't that to be expected: you're better at a 6 year old game than a 16 day old game?

I came here to say this basically!

"There is an abysmal selection of horn sounds" WTF?

First world problem......

Having 10 coins allows you a higher top speed so not totally useless when in 1st place....

Mario Kart 8 is nigh on perfect IMO

I get coins when I'm in 7th or 8th place sometimes. When I'm somewhere at the back, I hardly ever get any really good items, ever. Usually it's mushrooms, probably about 50-60% of the time (when I'm somewhere near the back of the pack).

Also, I agree about the horn sounds. Absolutely underwhelmingly awful.
