It's a shame that this was your first. Ideally, I would advise someone new to the series to play The Legend of Zelda and then Ocarina of Time. The Wind Waker was a good game, but paled in comparison to OOT.

Great to hear you've tried both Metroid and Zelda for the first time! I'll give you some recommendations as well, because this is the internet and EVERYONE has an opinion they wanna voice ;)
If you didn't like Metroid Prime 3, I don't think you'll enjoy MP1 either. It's pretty hard, has a lot of backtracking and can be somewhat confusing if you've never played a game like this before. I'll also say that you should stay clear of the original Metroid; it's kind of the same thing only in 2D. It's hard as fuck, has lots of exploration and can therefore be quite confusing if you're not used to it. I have no idea how S Metroid is though.
2D Zeldas are rather different than 3D Zeldas; you get thrown into the action the minute you start up the game. While I think Twilight Princess is a great game, the first hour or so is tedious as fuck. But it gets better and has great boss battles. ALLTP/ALBW is a great place to start if you wanna play a 2D Zelda. ALBW is pretty awesome since you're free to do any dungeon you wanna do after you've done the first two. You should also check out Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. I'm playing it now for the first time in like 10-15 years and I've noticed how it eases you into the whole experience. You get to the action pretty quickly and ramps up the difficulty in a comfortable pace. It's a masterpiece for a reason.
