That's a good idea. Both games are much shorter than Windwaker (10-15 hours) so it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience to borrow it from your friend. Also there aren't any tedious parts like in the 3D Zeldas. Everything you do is concise and rewarded, I can't recall any big fetch quests. You go from dungeon to dungeon if you want, or you can do side-quests for gear upgrades or you can just explore, but you are never left with too many choices that you are lost or can't decide. 

Alright. Now I have 2 new VGC recommendations. I think I'll try S Metroid first and then ALBW / ALTTP later on since I just finished ZWWHD.

I recommend you try Twilight Princess as well, Totally different feel and look but just has that enough oomph to make it feel Zelda and it is a great adventure. Personally, onne of my favourites

Try the first Metroid Prime. I like the second one best, but I don't think you're going to like that one. It's by far the hardest of the three. Even the atmosphere is out to get you in that game. :P

I don't have a GC and don't feel like bringing out the Wii. If it ever comes to the eshop, (likely) I'll consider the purchase.

Trust me, you don't like Dark Aether's atmosphere! :P

Metroid Prime 3 had less exploration and puzzle solving than the previous 2 MP. It almost seemed like it was made for more casual gamers. I still very much liked the game, but I prefered to stay on one planet. 

MP 1 and 2 just ooze atmosphere. MP3 less so. I also didn't like the fact you weren't as isolated as before. 

Nintendo ruined Metroid by making it first person. All of the great game play from Super Metroid was lost with Prime.

Gz, not my favourite Zelda, played through it for the first time last autumn. Zelda games need more time to grow on me I guess. I recommend A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds. My favourite is still Twilight Princess though. Again, congratulations!

Edit: Like the other people said, play Super Metroid!!! I've played through it AT LEAST 30 times since I finished it for the first time early last year, it's that good. One of my all time favourites. 

No. Start with the real original Metroid (or Metroid: Zero Mission if you want a more up to date version), then Super Metroid, and then Metroid Fusion and weep how shitty metroid games have become.

Your next Zelda should be Ocarina of Time. (Should have been your first :p ) To me, it is still the epitome of 3D Zelda. It's the only 3D Zelda (in my opinion) without any real, noticeable flaws (Wind Wakers Triforce hunt) or frustrating annoyances (Skyward Sword's Imprisoned battles). For 2D Zelda, you've chosen well...A Link Between Worlds (my preference) or A Link to the Past are both the "standard".
