Nah. I don't see it happening. They'll probably just make anything cool in Home cost money via minitransactions.
Probably also use different home items that are likely to be desireable as "marketing chips" with software companies.

Man MS is just the paragon of honesty in comparison. Every console manufacturer denies price cuts before they happen, that is just standard practice. Please offer a link to your claim that Sony said their online of their Home service will "probably" become a pay service. The fact remains is that Sony is the only one of the three who has yet to outline a plan for paying for online services. Plain and simple. Actions speak louder than words. I think Sony has done a good job of listening to its fans. They dropped the price, they stepped up their online service with regular updates and expanded content, and they add updates to the firmware that gives fans what they asked for. Seriously dude, why all the Sony hate? Did they kill your parents or something? |
LOL. The reason why Sony (and anyone else for that matter), can get away from talking outright BS, is because of people forget. When PSN was introduced, Sony stated that charging for online was optional for publishers. I can't remember word by word how it was announced, but i'd take that as Sony isn't going to charge for online, but 3rd parties can if they want to. Which apparently is pretty similar to what Nintendo stated about pay to play. And as what it comes to charging for Home, i don't think so. It would mean less users, which would mean less premium content sold and less money from advertisements. Of course, if there's not enough users for Home, there still is a possibility Sony starts to charge from it, but even if it would make a small loss, keeping Home free to use, would still help the console sales.
Ei Kiinasti.
Eikä Japanisti.
Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.
Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
Home will be free, but there will be tons of things you can buy on it, that's how they plan to make money.

nope.
they will make the $ from people buying crap to add to the "homes" and advertising.

Because they don't need to. Online should be freem you've allready bought the game so why pay for it again.
ONLY Microsoft has this model.
None of the 3 console manufacturers are squeeky clean, all have been caught having to retract statements. Why do you focus on Sony?
Running these networks is not expensive, its a simple friends list and minor authentication. The same as MSN or Googletalk. The games themselves are P2P. they generate loads of revenue through the sale of games and addons so its in the companies interest for it to be free.
Its whats called in the industry, a loss leader. |
Unfortunately, I think that Dodece is more right than wrong. None of the 3 console makers have made this generation consoles that never break down either. But if I were to say, why focus on Microsoft when Wii and PS3 break down as well, that would be a bit over the top, wouldn't you say?
Which company this time around as been nailed the most for PR gaffs?
That being said, I think it will depend on how popular Home gets. If it becomes very popular, most everything about it will become a premium service. If not, then more things about it will stay free, and as you say, a loss leader.
We see the same thing going on in console prices. Nintendo could have easily reduced the price of the Wii, but only Microsoft and Sony have lowered their console prices. Why? Because the Wii is still wildly popular, and X360 and PS3 (especially before the price cuts) were not.
Torturing the numbers. Hear them scream.
