Forums - Gaming - will game developers use the blu-ray in the next consoles?

As I said it's time is running out. once upon a time discs were new and not as cheap as now. The same with HD TV's. It's only a matter of time. Downloading is already effecting Blu rays reach.
Yet plastic is still by far the cheapest way to store any large amount of data including paper (pictures) let along hardware storage like flash drive as well as HDD. (downloads material requires something solid to store it on).

Sony and MS will definitely use it because they both also try to be media players, and if it is already built in they will use it for the games.

Nintendo will use a knock-oof as some have said. Using HD-DVD would be a neat trick to avoid piracy and get a format on the cheap. But since the system wont play movies it realyl wont matter what they make the games on. There is also a chance they will try and stick out DVD for one more generation (Yuk).

Downloaded games are not there yet. Yes next genertaion might allow us to download most games and there may be an alternate no disc sku, but these companies don't want to limit any consumers from buying their stuff. Broadband penetration and spees in the US are terrible and they will only be slightly better in 5-10 years.

Considering that the next systems specs are be decided on right now I imagine Blu-Ray winning will expedite the decision process .

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

I think they will, just at a much faster reading speed. They may turn to solid state games, but they will need a disk drive for BC.

Floppy discs?

yes, Blu-ray can have up to 8-layers currently which is 200GBs.

Where'd you hear that? Everything I've read has always said 4-layers (definitely not small by any means btw)

OT: I don't know about Blu-Ray, but before the 360, every company has always used larger storage formats for successive systems.

Nintendo:

NES cart about 50kb

Sony:

PS1 800mb disc<50gb PS3 Blu-Ray

I think that as early as the next couple of years, MS will give the 360 a firware update to let the 360 use HD-VMDs, which only require a software update for a DVD drive and can hold roughly the same as a BR. Nintendo likely won't do that.

I actually wouldnt be suprised if someone used the HD DVD format as it would be cheap to licence and no one would be able to copy the games.

Either way something with the storage space of Blu could be ideal for next gen consoles, who knows what formats will be out by then.

I could see the next Xbox using this. I hope they'll use triple-layer HD DVDs.
