Forums - Nintendo - Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Will Not Allow You To Play With Japanese Players (but US/EU is a go)

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will allow for online multiplayer on a handheld platform for the first time, but online is still slightly restricted by region, according to Capcom.

Over on Capcom Unity, Capcom Community Specialist Yuri confirms in a comment that western players will not be able to play online with Japanese players, since the Japanese and western releases of the game will be hosted on different servers.

This is in line with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which—following a patch—allowed American and European players to play with one another, but not with Japan. One could argue that this makes sense, since Monster Hunter is so heavily reliant on cooperative play, and the language barrier between Japan and the West could prove to be a major hindrance.

On the bright side, Yuri confirmed that you will be able to play online with anyone, not just people on your friends list.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be be released in Japan this Fall. North America and Europe will get the game in early 2015.

Japanese players are also too good for most of us here. :P

Good, keeps us happy that we can play Us and Eu and it keeps the Japanese happy because they don't have to play with us terrible westerners =P

As long as it allows me to play with myself I'm fine.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

It's great. I wanted to buy the 3DS version of MH3U, but no online just made it uninteresting to me. I don't know anyone for local multiplayer, so online is a must have for a monster hunter game. Multi-region support should help keep populations high. Most Europeans understand and speak at least some basic English, while Japanese do not, so it makes sense that Japan and Europe/NA are separated. Also Japanese players have had MH4 for a while now, which can create disparities in player level (possibly, but I doubt it.)

the ping would be horrible...

I'm also expecting Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate to be announced for the Wii U during the Digital Event. Good times ahead methinks.
