price is a good point that i havent mentioned. consoles do have to be competitively priced.

It's the better console

so the best console always sells the most? lol. id say most of the time it does, but in this scenario, i really dont see how the ps4 isnt the weakest out of the three. what are you supposed to do with the damn thing? haha.

Yes absolotely the best console sells the most. That's what makes it the best. The people want it, therefore it sells, therefore it is the best console in peoples opinions. Last gen it was the Wii. I didn't like the Wii, but clearly it was the console people wanted. It was the better console.

A few good decisions.

1) Sony set a good price target of $400, while MS decided pursuing the Kinect is worth releasing a $500 console.
2) Sony picked GDDR5 instead of DDR3+ESRAM, allowed them to ultimately have flexible memory and more GPU cores on-die and have a clear performance win.  A more powerful console for less money sealed the fate more than anything.
3) Sony focused on quick-play from disc, while MS focused on an the idea of digital game library where you only need the disc once. Not having to swap discs is a nice feature, but the backlash over inability to share & sell your games meant this feature never saw the light of day, so Sony again make the right decision from the start while MS wasted effort on an unpopular idea.

Since a camera didn't fit in the $400 target, Sony didn't bundle a camera with the PS4 even though you can see they developed new camera related and motion control features. This was very fortunate since the Kinect was badly received and blamed for the price difference, so Sony just downplayed their own camera product and profited.

nice analysis. a lot of things seem to be playing in sony's favor, here. do you think its enough to get them to 75% marketshare?

Right now I think it will do 70% but who knows in the end.  If they play their cards right, deliver exciting announcements at E3 then they can.  They have not only games but lots of interesting features with project Morpheus, PS Now & backwards compatibility.  David Perry (of Earthworm Jim) CEO of Gaikai is very smart and I'm awaiting to see PS Now.

My 8th gen collection

  1. every console needs hype and word of mouth to sell. Its about generating mind share. once people associate certain things with you, you carry that through for the rest of the generation.
  2. Some may not want to admit it, but credit should be given where credit is due. Playstation is the bigger brand. No other company would have survived launching at $600. Especially when at the time their competition had a $300 console. Just look at what $500 did to MS even with its closest rival being only $100 less.
  3. Right now, mindshare tells that games are better on playstation. Its not just a random 1k people arguing about that on the internet, it filters out into the public. Word of mouth. Last gen, 360 strived primarily of that monicker that it was the best place to play games, thanks to multiplats and its online service. Only way sont could set itself apart was to keep churning out exclusives. Now, MS hasn't got the multiplats to carry it, and for every one exclusive MS can make, sony can make two.
  4. everybody kinda likes drama. last gen, it was pretty fun to watch the fall of the king and the rise of the underdog. It was a nice story, helped by the fact that Ms was pushing all the right buttons. Thing though is, that everyone likes a comeback story even more. Especially since the tables have been reversed.
  5. MS made the same mistake that sony made last gen, pushed ideas and plans ahead of gamers. That cost sony last gen and this gen they made a console putting gamers first. MS were more concerned with how they could get their hands into everything you did at home. Its gonna hurt them more.
  6. everyone that bought a PS3 has no reason to buy an XBO instead this gen, so sony has pretty much secured all its PS3 fans  (or at least those still buying a console)
  7. lastly, and something a lot of people keep forgeting. the original XB sold around 30M consoles worldwide. Around 2/3rd of that was in the states. However, the 360 sold 80+M worldwide, again with more than half coming from the states. xbox sold more and PS sold less, that means that a lot of the people that bought a 360 (not counting first time console owners) probably had a PS2 and were just not the most loyal bunch or couldn't stomach paying $600 so they went on to the xbox. Yet, somehow, xbox fans suddenly feel those people would suddenly become loyal to the xbox brand now that the PS is the cheaper and more powerful console? Nope, they are jumping ship again. Going back home so to speak.

microsoft shot themselves in the foot with an rpg launcher?

Price and hype

Around the Network

Sony has many reasons to get this success and they deserve this.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

Sony learned a lot from their misgivings with the PS3. Expensive custom architecture. Price compared to the 360, Difficult to develop for. What was perceived at the time as a mandatory extra, ie Blu-ray and pushed more as a multiple use machine, trying to dictate to the customer.

MS didn't seem to learn from the 360. This time they dictated to the customer and pushed more as a multiple use machine, made the X1 less developer friendly compared to the PS4, Price compared to the PS4.

It's almost an exact reversal when you look at the higher level strategic direction.

PS3 adapted to become more game centric and now the X1 is doing the exact same thing.

Because cooler people are on PS4. How many dungeon masters play on Xbone?
