I may remember wrong but didn't one bg dev complain about the length of last gen, after a while userbases become more apathetic and just buy the same yearly releases?
In anycase the fact that WatchDogs sold 4x more on PS4 then PS3 says something given the respective userbases. I think 5 years as a minimum is ok, it keeps the industry exciting and people intereste. Maybe its possible that nextgen developers are able to create games for playstation 4 and simply allow higher configuration settings when playing on PS5?
5 years is fine. If anything Nintendo should've switched to 4 years a long time ago ... the GameCube and Wii U both launched one year too late and would be in a far better position had they had an extra year headstart.
The added 5th year for the N64 and the 6th year for the Wii was pointless compared to the superior position they could've put themselves in with their successive consoles.

But anyone will be wrong to think that this gen will end before 2020. The PS5/XB(n) will both be anounced and released in 2020, that will mean that this gen wil be 7yrs long. Some forget that they are in this business to make money. And they make more money with a larger install base. 7yrs also makes it possible to build a console that can do 4k@60fps for under $400.

And what makes you think it won't? Most likely one of the main reasons both consoles moved to x86 archticture. It makes perfect sense. And will cut down on future console development costs etc. Consoles will still have benefits of things just "working" and not the whole playing around with settings to get things to work.. Just 2 settings.. simple and easy.
It is not like this hasn't already happened in the days past of consoles gaming.. simple power upgrades.. Sega 32x.. Nitendo 64 expension pack.. etc.. This would just be taking it to a more natural evolution.

A lessor focus on actually improving graphics? To be honest they could do that now but they obviously prefer actual graphical depth over resolution.
