I'd be okay with it if all Nintendo touches is software development as far as homeconsoles are concerned.

I don't think they would ever merge, though Nintendo could make a really good deal to release some of their games on PS4 and keep the handheld market for themselves. They probably could get away with not having to pay any royalty's whatsoever to Sony.
And releasing controller/game combo's for other systems can be very profitable aswell. Activision made like 2 billion with the Guitar Hero franchise.
Nintendo's design philosophy with Sony's hype machine? Well third parties would still flock to the remaining Nontendo console but I don't think it'd matter as much.
Eh. Beyond Zelda and Metroid, I'm not a big fan of Nintendo's currently active franchises. I would rather they remain as competitors.
If it did happen, however, I would hope that Nintendo would become a software wing only, with both Nintendo and World Wide Studios retaining their own individuality. It should be something like the working relationship between Activision and Blizzard, where both do their own thing in terms of content.

I think it's a great idea. I think that if Sony was to drop their unprofitable ventures and then Sony and Nintendo were to merge, they'd benefit each other greatly.
One problem though and something I don't like, is Nintendo is more about maximizing profits than anything. This really isn't good for the industry or the consumer, because rather than pushing the envelope, they cheap out when it comes to console design and some of their gaming budgets. If the merger did take place, someone in Sony would have to lead the company.
Also, it will eventually happen that Sony and Nintendo merge, because companies go bankrupt, and I don't think Japan would just allow one of their biggest cultural exports to be halved like that. Even if it takes sixty generations the Nintendo Playstation will happen. (I picked sixty for a reason, first person to tell me what it is gets happiness!)
