Forums - Gaming - Mario Kart 8 makes the Wii U the first must-have console

Not everyone thinks Mario Kart and other Nintendo games are the best games, or even close to the best games. Or that they alone are worth buying a console for. Sorry.

They alone may not be, but when you are getting a console for $165 that has the best next-gen games currently available and coming out this year (and that isn't up for debate, WWHD, MK8, Pikmin 3, 3DW, and DKC:TF are all better than any other game available on the PS4 or Xbox One, and two of them are available for free with MK8).

Not everyone may, and that's why I said it was in my opinion, but the vast majority of people will love at least one or two of the games I mentioned, and getting the Wii U for that price is a killer deal.

Lego city, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, best version of Ninja Gaiden 3, Zelda, etc. If you buy the Wii U and every Wii U game and still do not like it, I will shave my scrotal hair and eat it.

Well, my objection is the claim it is the only one worth owning. Not that it is not worth owning by anybody.  I assume this practice of scrotal hair eating is your monthly practice anyways.

You also get ~130 Club Nintendo coins from the 2 games for 1 promotion that goes until end of July. Got 70 coins for MK8 and 60 coins for download version of NSMBU surveys. So this almost brings you close to getting a NES, SNES, or N64 game for free (most games are 200-250 coins).  You just gotta wait till site isn't flooded with people trying to register.

That's kinda the boat I'm in. The game looks cool enough I guess. But I have no interest in it at all. I don't know a single person (outside of gaming forums) who cares at all. Matter of fact, most everyone still doesn't fully realize what the Wii U is. I'm more interested in Zelda or Wonderful 101. Not a single Wii U game is worth buying the console for. That applies to all next gen offerings so far across all the platforms.

I have to be honest here. While I don't think that Mario Kart 8, by itself, makes the Wii U a must own console, I do think that the free game deal does in very specific cases. If you've never played The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, then yeah, Mario Kart 8 + Wind Waker HD = must own. If you are a big Pikmin fan, then Mario Kart 8 + Pikmin 3 = must own. In any other case, I'd wait.

The issue is, while Mario Kart 8 is unequivocally phenomenal, it has the issue of being primarily a multiplayer game. The problem with that is that no matter good it is, it will eventually get repetitive. By that, I mean, you can only play so much of a game like Mario Kart before you've played everything, and after that, it's only a matter of time before you want to play something else to break the pace.

That's when big single player games come in. The Wii U won't truly be a must console until those huge multi-hour single player campaign killer apps come in. The X's, the Metroids, the Star Fox's, the open world Mario's, or the Zelda's. Once one of those games is out, along with Mario Kart 8, the Wii U will be a must have console.

You need at least two types of games for you console to be a must have, in my opinion. One huge single player game with a substantially long campaign, and a multiplayer game for breaks in between and most importantly, for longevity.

That's why Smash and Kart are so important to Nintendo consoles. You have two top of the line multiplayer games that work perfectly in conjunction with the single player Nintendo game that got you to but the system. I'd never advise anyone to buy a Wii U just for MK8 and/or Smash alone, but instead in conjunction with one of Nintendo's single player killer apps.

Certainly does apply to all the consoles. People also buy knowing there is more to come. It is not just about the here and now. I too know no one that owns a Wii U. Only know a few that own the X1 or PS4, yet. Still, that is still more than the Wii U.

nom nom :p

you nasty!

Only because it came out like a year before hand. Other two systems are still quickly building their libraries with must haves. Wolfenstein and watch dogs are recent examples. They will easily catch up by years end. But.. Wii U will have even more then as well. Then all will be worth a purchase.

I am pretty convinced I will own them all at some point,  just as I owned them all last gen. My priority is always Playstation, xbox, and then Nintendo console as always. It would take an amazing console to change that order and Sony offered the the most powerful one, and that is what I care about most.

The Wii U is at a price right now that it is the perfect console to buy, if only for single player games. For less than the price of three PS4 games you can have the console. Nintendo consoles have never been quite as much about the social aspect than they have been about the amazing first-party titles.

If you go only by what the people you know have, you'll miss some of the best games, if not the best in the next year or two.

The same thing happened with the Gamecube: It had a library that was amazing and almost as good, if not as good or even better than the PS2, but no one really bought it, and it was only after the generation ended that people realized just how much they had missed.

I find it odd that you'd say it's NOT so much about the social aspect, because that's precisely why I buy Nintendo consoles first and the other ones later; nobody does social like Nintendo. And by social, I mean local multiplayer; actually gaming in the same room as friends. I've already got at least about seven excellent games for that on the console.

Anyway, I agree with OP; with the range of quality software on the Wii U now, it's easily ahead of the others for me. The best offerings on PS4/XO at the moment seem to be things like Watch_Dogs (which got lukewarm reviews and is coming to Wii U this year anyway), or things like Titanfall or FIFA that cater well to brogamers but not so much to a broader audience.

It is cheaper than the others. I already own the PS4. In fact, I bought it less then two weeks ago. I was not too happy with my Wii. In which I only bought Nintendo games for it. My lack of favor towards the Wii U as compared to the other two is too complex for me to want to share here. The point is that the Wii was a disapointment to me. Thus, I am now wary to buy a Nintendo console so soon. It seems like a console only worth buying at the end of the generation so that I know it will have enough games to sastiate my gaming thirst. That and I still am playing games on my PS3 and 360.
