I have to be honest here. While I don't think that Mario Kart 8, by itself, makes the Wii U a must own console, I do think that the free game deal does in very specific cases. If you've never played The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, then yeah, Mario Kart 8 + Wind Waker HD = must own. If you are a big Pikmin fan, then Mario Kart 8 + Pikmin 3 = must own. In any other case, I'd wait.

The issue is, while Mario Kart 8 is unequivocally phenomenal, it has the issue of being primarily a multiplayer game. The problem with that is that no matter good it is, it will eventually get repetitive. By that, I mean, you can only play so much of a game like Mario Kart before you've played everything, and after that, it's only a matter of time before you want to play something else to break the pace.

That's when big single player games come in. The Wii U won't truly be a must console until those huge multi-hour single player campaign killer apps come in. The X's, the Metroids, the Star Fox's, the open world Mario's, or the Zelda's. Once one of those games is out, along with Mario Kart 8, the Wii U will be a must have console.

You need at least two types of games for you console to be a must have, in my opinion. One huge single player game with a substantially long campaign, and a multiplayer game for breaks in between and most importantly, for longevity.

That's why Smash and Kart are so important to Nintendo consoles. You have two top of the line multiplayer games that work perfectly in conjunction with the single player Nintendo game that got you to but the system. I'd never advise anyone to buy a Wii U just for MK8 and/or Smash alone, but instead in conjunction with one of Nintendo's single player killer apps.
