Honestly if they were going to expand they might as well have 64 teams and just a knockout tournament from the beginning. That way the World Cup would actually have they same amount of games as it does now. Just like the Euros I don't like the idea of only 1/3 of teams going out in the first round.

64 teams sounds even more excessive than 48. I wish they had just done 40 teams with 5 team groups. It would be 1 extra match per team, but just play one less friendly before the tournament and that's fixed.

5 team groups works well enough for the Rugby World Cup, and with there being more competitive teams in football around the world it could have thrown up some interesting groups of death where one or two big teams are guaranteed to go out. I don't think there's any chance of a group of death with the 3 team groups, sure you might get something like Germany and Brazil together but then the third team would be Panama or something

They would be forced to make the tournament longer in that case, making the European clubs even angrier.

With 16 groups the likelihood of facing a top team is smaller. If Canada made the World Cup only to face Wales and Burkina Faso it wouldn't have really felt like they made the World Cup.

For the other discussion I definitely would like to see a World Cup prediction league this year.

Join the Prediction League http://www.vgchartz.com/predictions

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

There used to be another football thread, this one turned into the default one in Brazil 2014

Maybe another one can start with Russia 2018?

Of course another thread can be started. The all-important question is who will take on the responsibility.

It won't be me, that's for sure. But anyone who is up to the task, should explicitly say so in this thread. If there are multiple people who are willing to do make a new thread, they should lay out what plans they have for the World Cup and beyond, and then we vote on the best combination of idea and reliability of the forum member (we shouldn't pick someone who appears to be prone to abandon the thread on a whim).

I suppose it would be good to say what our expectations are. Personally, I want some kind of prediction league for the World Cup, but I don't have any notable wishes beyond that. If there's not much more than the occasional poll every now and then, then that's fine by me.

Others might want to see a prediction league for the next Champions League season or even the English Premier League. As far as other leagues are concerned, I have not noticed high enough interest in them, so the overall expectations toward the person who sets up a new thread are unlikely to be anything huge. The one thing that is agreed on is that it should be a step up from what we currently have which is essentially nothing.

Agree, hope someone has is willing to do it (I won't either )

Still, I remember the older one had lots of posting at the beginning and when this one was created the other one had been dead for a while(Like same 3 users posting and no one responding, couldn't find it though). World cup hype could give a boost for a new one like it did before, I hope this time it's like what you describe

Wenger's Out!

Hmm, pie.

I am only gonna laugh if he's replaced by Luis Enrique.

Pretty exciting to see where we're going from now on. Respect and thanks to Wenger, one of the legendary managers! It's been quite a ride.

I thought he looked like a nice dude, I felt he should've gone earlier so that he wouldn't get as much hate as he did.

West Brom pull it off again.

Back to conceding late silly goals. Ugh.

Anyone rooting for Totten tonight?
