Number 10 has been associated with attacking midfielders of second strikers like Pelé, Maradona, Zico, Platiní, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho or Zidane for ages.

It's also been associated with poachers as well...

Like I said, saying a shirt number rather than actually saying what a player's position or role on the team should be is a stupid idea because it just doesn't mean much. Shirt numbers are whatever the players/teams want and vary massively. #1 doesn't even guarantee the player is a goalkeeper anymore. Much easier to just say the position you're talking about...

No. 1 and No. 13 being non-goalkeepers is blasphemy.

The thing is it's difficult to define positions when they're changing all the time. A full-back crossing into the box regularly would've been unheard of not that long ago.

The idea of these 'roles' in football being given numbers makes sense. Saying you're gonna moves a centre back into the 6 role is just easy

And the Number 9 is still predominantly the main striker. Benzema, Lukaku, Cavani, Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Suarez, Falcao, Morata, Belotti etc etc.

And how is saying you're going to move a centre back into the defensive midfielder (or DM for short) role not easy?

It's easy too but it's just a shorter way of doing it. We have abbreviations in everything.

When Van Nistelrooy played players were allowed to wear any number.

Number associations were stablished back in the days when starters had to wear numbers 1-11 (from the 20's until the 90's), and players wearing whatever number they want nowadays isn't going to change them.

Just had one of the craziest nights ever in Copenhagen. Happy with the result too. I'll take a 0-0 draw going into the second leg.

And it's official, we're going to have a World Cup with no Italy for the first time since 1958! Incredible!

I won't miss them either. Don't think I've ever seen Italy play and thought "this is fun to watch", so good riddance!

I only watched the last 35 minutes, holy fuck that was fucking shit. Sweden just sitting back and Italy having 0 clue what to do with the ball.

I smell a conspiracy. FIFA made sure the Netherlands, Chile, Italy and the USA missed out to justify them expanding the World Cup /s.

What's gonna be the theory when a big team misses out on the 48 team World Cup then?

Still the same.

I dont even like football...

Hunting Season is done...

Italy haven't been strong in ages, the fact Buffon is still #1 shows this. Totti was playing football up until last season. Both legends but remnants of an Italy that were the best in the world. Their new crop isn't the best.

... kind of like England. Remember when our back 4 were Ashley Cole, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville? Jesus what a defence.

Hmm, pie.
