The idea of these 'roles' in football being given numbers makes sense. Saying you're gonna moves a centre back into the 6 role is just easy. 

And the Number 9 is still predominantly the main striker. Benzema, Lukaku, Cavani, Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Suarez, Falcao, Morata, Belotti etc etc.

And how is saying you're going to move a centre back into the defensive midfielder (or DM for short) role not easy?

It's easy too but it's just a shorter way of doing it. We have abbreviations in everything.
