Forums - Gaming - The Motley Fool asks-" Is Microsoft's Xbox One the New Wii U?"

RolStoppable said:

No, it's not. The Xbox One is tracking behind the PS4 in every country in a launch-aligned comparison while the Wii U is tracking ahead of the PS4 in at least one country.

EDIT: Wait, I've forgotten about Brazil. Let's just say that that country doesn't count, so I am still right.

how do we know PS4 outsold WiiU in Brazil?

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

So now they're using the Nintendo playbook too? Damn.

Also, lol. No. If the Xbone ever reaches the point where sales are terrible and its losing 3rd party support, then there might be an issue.

No way. MS has alrerady beaten Nintendo in N. American and will probably by the end of the year overtake them. Plus they basically ended up in 2nd place for gen7. When you have two consoles that basically have sold about the same amount of hardware or one has sold a tiny bit more you have to look at who ended  up selling the most games and it's by far the 360 over PS3. MS has sold 64 milllion more games and counting than the PS3. The money is in the software. MS domintaed PS all gen7.

Yes they are similar. Both have had failed "gimmick" add-ons that have hurt the power and reputation of their respective console. Both are made by companies that started off on the wrong foot this gen.

Whether or not MS dodged a bullet by dropping Kinect remains to be seen. There's very little MS could right now to turn things around back into their favor. With the XOne inevitably selling less than the 360, it'll receive less 3rd party support.

The X1's fate has been sealed. It's a second-tier console compared to power and diverse catalog of the PS4 and the sheer force of Nintendo gaming brilliance on the Wii U/3DS.

The Kinect did not hurt Xbox One's reputation.

XOnes fate is sealed?  By 2 things that are your opinion..   how is the PS4 catalog any more diverse then Xbox One?  Up until now..  the Xbox One has mainly been considered to have the stronger line-up..  (not counting Indies.. which doesn't drive console buying). Even still there are LESS console exclusives then ever before.. with more titles that were ONLY on Playstation now coming to X1.  and the sheer force of Nintendo's brillance sure has already failed the Wii U.  (Not sure why 3DS was even included in this).. The Wii U has passed that 1 year mark.. and the general population has lost interest.... So .. real confused by this statement.

It has hurt their reputation. They've outright lied to everyone by saying they'd "never" do a kinect-less X1, and only a few short months later, here we are. This is among several about-faces and major reversals. Granted, all those changes have been made for the better.  But it's firmly cemented in most people's minds that MS does it wrong before getting it right. There's no denying that if you're at the end where they've done it wrong, it costs YOU some some serious coin.

Even with the Titanfall release, X1 has failed to gain on the PS4. Mathematically extrapolating the sales trends -- the X1 will struggle reach 50 million once this gen reaches maturity while the PS4 breezes by 100 million. The PS4 is a more powerful console,  had better price point earlier on and has a more open policy for 3rd party/indie development. Even if the X1 matches the PS4 in NA,  the PS4 competes globally far better than the X1. These are factors that not only contribute to the PS4 success, but also the inevitable decline of Xbox brand's hardware sales and its 3rd party support.

As for the WiiU -- it's just getting started... Most people who would probably buy it don't know it exists. That is bound to change in the coming year. Especially in the coming month.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Of course they are not the same. WiiU has much better games.

In other words, Microsoft is a lot closer to Nintendo than to Sony five months into a lunch.

Man, it is taking them more than 5 months to east a lunch?  That must be a crazy big meal!

Again. You say one thing for Xbox One..  then contradict yoruself with the Wii U..  You can't say people dont even know the Wii U exists when it's been on the market for 1.5 years now..    but THEN say "its firmly cemented in most peoples minds" about the Xbox One..     the Xbox One has been out 6 months..  the majority of people do NOT know it exists.. most will learn about it this coming holiday. Nothing is cemented in the average consumers mind. Where the Wii U has now had 2 holiday times...

Mathematically etxrapolating? The Xbox One is STILL ahead of the Xbox 360..    so how do you mathematically say anything?  This with having to compete against 2 consoles (X360 was out alone the first year) and while being $100 more..   Again.. Confusing..  Xbox One had a stonger launch then the X360 even with all the "bad" press and actually having real competition.

You act as if both the PS4 and Xbox One have been out for year.. its 6 months in.  3rd party support started WELL before a single console was sold.. and as we heard .. it seemed many thought the Xbox One would outsell the PS4.. so those projects have already begun..    With the new price point the X1 will continue to hold its own..  It is no surprise that globally the PS4 will outsell the X1.. Playstaion 2 sold 150 million consoles..  so not even hitting 90 million for the PS3 was a huge disappointment..   The Xbox sold only 25m.. so selling 85m was a HUGE increase.. either way.. Playstation is the larger global brand in game consoles.

The PS4 and X1 will at this point be the only 2 next gen consoles out for the next few years..  3rd party support isn't going anywhere..   Microsoft has money to spend..  Sony does not.. Microsoft will make sure the games keep coming.
