Yes they are similar. Both have had failed "gimmick" add-ons that have hurt the power and reputation of their respective console. Both are made by companies that started off on the wrong foot this gen.
Whether or not MS dodged a bullet by dropping Kinect remains to be seen. There's very little MS could right now to turn things around back into their favor. With the XOne inevitably selling less than the 360, it'll receive less 3rd party support.
The X1's fate has been sealed. It's a second-tier console compared to power and diverse catalog of the PS4 and the sheer force of Nintendo gaming brilliance on the Wii U/3DS.

The Kinect did not hurt Xbox One's reputation.
XOnes fate is sealed? By 2 things that are your opinion.. how is the PS4 catalog any more diverse then Xbox One? Up until now.. the Xbox One has mainly been considered to have the stronger line-up.. (not counting Indies.. which doesn't drive console buying). Even still there are LESS console exclusives then ever before.. with more titles that were ONLY on Playstation now coming to X1. and the sheer force of Nintendo's brillance sure has already failed the Wii U. (Not sure why 3DS was even included in this).. The Wii U has passed that 1 year mark.. and the general population has lost interest.... So .. real confused by this statement.

It has hurt their reputation. They've outright lied to everyone by saying they'd "never" do a kinect-less X1, and only a few short months later, here we are. This is among several about-faces and major reversals. Granted, all those changes have been made for the better. But it's firmly cemented in most people's minds that MS does it wrong before getting it right. There's no denying that if you're at the end where they've done it wrong, it costs YOU some some serious coin.
Even with the Titanfall release, X1 has failed to gain on the PS4. Mathematically extrapolating the sales trends -- the X1 will struggle reach 50 million once this gen reaches maturity while the PS4 breezes by 100 million. The PS4 is a more powerful console, had better price point earlier on and has a more open policy for 3rd party/indie development. Even if the X1 matches the PS4 in NA, the PS4 competes globally far better than the X1. These are factors that not only contribute to the PS4 success, but also the inevitable decline of Xbox brand's hardware sales and its 3rd party support.
As for the WiiU -- it's just getting started... Most people who would probably buy it don't know it exists. That is bound to change in the coming year. Especially in the coming month.
