Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (As opposed to Sly 4)

God of War: Ascension (This one, and the one afterwards, you can understand more as they aren't generally considered mainline games, but still...)

Gears of War: Judgement (see above)

Disgaea D2

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Similar to Halo in the sense that it's the first mainline game to carry a subtitle)

Killzone: Shadow Fall (Why not Killzone 4?)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Could've been DKCR2?)

Infamous: Second Son (Stated it was to seperate from original protagonist, Cole, but games often change protagonist, so surely could've been a numbered sequel?)

Deception IV: Blood Ties (Why the subtitle?)

Then coming up we have Assassin's Creeed Unity (most likely a working title, but you never know...)

And there are rumours that the next Uncharted won't be called Uncharted 4... etc.

Of course, there seem to be reasons behind a lot of them, but it's just interesting to note a shift in the way companies are naming their products.

Numbered games aren't going to stop, it's always been this way.  Sometimes they want to number games, sometimes add subtitles.  What's it matter anyways.  More games in the past have been subtitled than numbered.  It's not subtitles are unique to this and last generation.

God of War Ascension isn't the first in the series to not have a subtitle.  Chains of Olympus was released two years prior to God of War 3.  So they went from number to subtitle.

Same with Assassin's Creed 3 which was released after Brotherhood and Revelation.

The Deception series has always had a subtitle except for the fourth game in the series named Trapt.  The second game in the series has Deception being the subtitled name.  In Japan, only the first game is called Deception, the third game is called something different, and the rest of them are the Kagero series, and include subtitles.

Or Legacy of Kain which is split into two series where Legacy of Kain is both the main title, subtitle, or not even part of the title.  There's Blood Omen Legacy of Kain, Blood Omen 2, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 2, and Legacy of Kain Defiance.  In this one you go from Subtitle to no subtitle with a number.  Subtitle, to same name subtitled with a number, with the last game in the series being a continuation of the Soul Reaver series with a different subtitle.

Tomb Raider started including subtitles after the second game in the series.

Wild ARMs in Japan has subtitles on every single game after the first.  Wild ARMs 2nd Ignition, Wild ARMs 3rd Advance, Wild ARMs 4th Detonator, Wild ARMs 5th Vanguard.
