Forums - Sales - DS:PSP about to hit 2:1 globally...

Since you're a stats-lover, have you ever wondered how many DS'es the average DS owner owns, what with the model change and the constant color additions (and then there are also the limited editions)? Is number of units sold more important than number of unique DS users?  What do you think the average number of PSP's per PSP owner is?  And how do you think the number of unique DS owners compares to the number of unique PSP owners?

Just a one-off bump for this thread... shuffling of global numbers has put off the "official" 2:1 ratio for a while... but now its here, and is here to stay.

I would look forward to the "3:1", but I think this is a long way off (if ever) ;) - 30m PSP, 90m DS?

PS - in other news, Wii is now only 2m behind the 360 globally... (9.89m vrs 7.89m). 360 should (finally) hit the 10m mark within 2 weeks.

Seems like it's taking the 360 forever to sell 200k consoles though...

It'd also be interesting to see what numbers are with the PSP in terms of unique users and the color additions.

Yep. The PSP hasn't changed color at all in the U.S. though. That I know of anyway. When I shopped for one, it only came in black. I have an original DS and a white DS Lite. I would much rather have a black one now, but there's no way I'm going to buy a third.

I can only guess. We have 5(?) at our house - this was boosted by the fact that my company gave *every* employee a DS for Xmas last year (and my housemate also works at the same company).

That said - I also have about 15 games. No PSP or PSP games.

Forget the hardware figures - look at the software sales. This is where the PSP really falls over. Its becoming more and more obvious that people primarily buy a PSP to play warez titles, or as a general media player.

(0 PSP  titles in the recent US weekly top 50 charts...)

...

When friends come over to our house (or we head out) we can take 4 DS's with us, for some fun multiplayer. Just wouldn't happen with the PSP.

Yeah, unfortunately software sales don't match unique users either because PSP is hacked notoriously. Maybe tracking number of downloaders on torrents is the best way to really figure out how many unique individuals own a PSP, LOL. Anyway, if I had to guess, I'd say number of PSP's per PSP owner must be pretty close to 1. I can't see myself getting more than one. Then again, some sort of redesigned PSP is being rumored, so I can't close the door on getting another.

Well I know the DS sells more games per unit hardware sold than the PSP. That should be the most telling stat at all. The PSP was supposed to be the hardcore gamer's handheld, yet DS owners are buying more games.

True but how many are not downloading weekly a game on their PSP it is incridible my brother have more than 50 illegal games on his PSP.

Oh, I thought it had reached 2:1 previously. It's both impressive for the DS and the PSP. Impressive for the DS, because that's simply MASSIVE sales, and impressive for the PSP to be selling half of what Nintendo's handheld is selling...the first non-Nintendo handheld to be a serious competition to Nintendo's.
Didn't Gamegear had a good share of sales compaired to the original GB? (Not 2:1 i'm sure.)

Pretty impressive that the PSP is able to compete in hand helds.
